Audi has finally unveiled the full details of the new A7 Sportback. Quite what the new car is, we're not sure. Audi says it's a "large, elegant five-door model" (okay, no problem there) that "combines the emotional character of a grand coupe, the comfort and prestige of a sedan and the active practicality of a station wagon". All very nice, but frankly it leaves us none the wiser as to what the A7 Sportback actually is...
Be that as it may, the new A7 is here, and order books open in mid-August with first deliveries expected toward the end of the year. Prices will start from just under £43k.

The 4.97-metre A7 is made of a mixture of aluminium and high-strength steels and is shorter, lower and narrower than the company's A8 flagship. It is also likely to sit on the same platform as the next-generation A6. Under the bonnet is a choice of four V6s (two turbodiesel, two petrol). All are direct-injection, and feature stop-start tech and brake energy recuperation. The top petrol option is a supercharged V6 that makes 295bhp and 325lb ft of torque - enough to propel the 3.0TFSI A7 to 62mph from rest in 5.6secs on the way to an electronically limited 155mph top speed. The fastest diesel, meanwhile offers 241bhp and a beefy 369lb ft of torque, which makes it good for a 0-62mph sprint of 6.5secs and a 155mph top end.

A hotter S7 version is expected to be unveiled at the Paris motor show in September, and an 'RS' is even rumoured. The two petrol options and the more powerful of the two diesels come with Quattro all-wheel drive and Audi's seven-speed S-tronic dual-clutch transmission as standard, while the entry-level diesel gets the option of Audi's Multitronic CVT gearbox and front-wheel drive.
Audi's active 'sport differential' is available as an option on four-wheel drive models, while the Audi drive select electronic assistance system comes fitted as standard. The standard steel suspension can also be swapped for an air-sprung system.
I really hate that. I hate the looks and I am struggling to see where this fits into audi's range, I really hope they don't do an RS7 of this ugly thing!

Seriously Audi, stop asking questions nobody asked!

A4, A5, A6, A7 and A8. 5 cars in the space that nobody thought wasn't big enough when it was just the A4, A6 and A8!

Why is Audi so scared of the word....

HATCHBACK

This is a HATCHBACK Audi. Just like your Audi A3 Sportback is a HATCHBACK. Just like your Audi A5 Sportback is a HATCHBACK, like a Ford Mondeo.

Changing the word 'Hatch' for 'Sport' is comical.

Audi are ace, so much better than any other car on the road and the new aspirational model for the hard of understanding. I can feel that harshness of ride and jittery (annoying as ****) chassis from here.

There was embarrassment in Germany today as Audi was forced to admit it couldn’t remember the point of its new A7.
‘We are pretty sure we had a point in mind when we started,’ admitted a spokesman. ‘But that was quite a while ago and we are, as you say in England, buggered if we can remember it now.’
One senior Ingolstadt source said they were ‘almost certain’ there was a piece of research that suggested a number of buyers were looking for a car that was inexplicably bigger than an A6 but not as big as an A8. ‘I’m pretty sure I saw it in a meeting, erm… somewhere,’ she said. ‘But I am, as you say in England, ****** if I know when.’
‘There must be a reason for it,’ said another insider. ‘I mean, it’s not the sort of thing you would just dream. Even though it’s a massive luxury car that’s also a hatchback, which is, as you say in England, twatting silly.’
One senior Audi manager admitted that the company had already formed a committee with the express intention of thinking up a reason why the A7 wasn’t a waste of everyone’s time. ‘We have to come up with something fast,’ he admitted. ‘Because frankly we are, as you say in England, ******** ourselves.’
‘There must be some point to it,’ our mole continued. ‘Having looked at the car in profile again, I wonder if it was something to do with a dog’.
:D

I thought Sportback was a medical condition caused by overly hard suspension.

I really don't see the point in half of the Audi lineup. 4 door A5... why? Buy an A4.

It's an ESTATE BMW ;)

But yes, silly car from silly Audi for silly Audi buyers !

It's an ESTATE BMW ;)

I knew that would come up but the word Estate isn't used really anywhre bar this country. So, no, its not. Touring, Wagon, Break etc etc are well established alternative terms for Estate.

Sportback is not a well established term for hatchback, it's Audi making hatchbacks but thinking they are too posh.

Indeed, Touring sounds better anyway but i had to for consistency reasons !

Even though its ugly Audi are still going to sell a whole load of them. They can't seem to do no wrong nowadays.

The interior is quite nice! Not as pleasing as the CLS interior mind!
