I knew that would come up but the word Estate isn't used really anywhre bar this country. So, no, its not. Touring, Wagon, Break etc etc are well established alternative terms for Estate.

Sportback is not a well established term for hatchback, it's Audi making hatchbacks but thinking they are too posh.

Exactly..... I mean everyone knows the posh name for a hatchback is Gran Turismo :D

Back end doesn't look right really, looks too flat I think, perhaps it will look better in the flesh. Interior looks nice, so I don't really dislike this car just because Audi seem to be padding out the range a bit, yes the marketing with sportback is a bit odd but I think I like this, it looks better then the new A8 imo, and is argueably just as luxurious with added practicality, and if you prefer the looks then it's a winner really.

Dont worry, they got what they deserved with that, nobody has bought one :p

I saw one the other day in works car park, don't know if someone had actually bought it though or if it was a company car that was shoved on them :p

Why?

I know;

A4 Rivals/BMW 3 Series/Merc C-Class
A6/BMW 5 Series/Merc E-Class
A8/BMW 7 Series/Merc S-Class

Then you've got the A3 Which probably rivals BMW 1 Series/VW Golf

Then the A5? I mean that comes in 'Sportback'/Convirtable/Coupe form. I see no point for it, because the A4 basically comes in that form Apart from coupe.

A7? Ok to rival the Merc CLS, but why make it that ugly from behind.

A5 rivals the BMW 6-Series.

A5 rivals the BMW 6-Series.

Ah I see. But the 6 Series comes in Coupe/Convertible form. I don't see a 6 Series 4 door. I don't understand why Audi do this.

They might aswell make an Avant version of the A5. Because an A4 Avant isn't enough isn't enough.

Oh no it doesnt! It's a 3 Series Coupe rival. There is no longer an A4 cab - the A5 is the cab instead now. All Audi have done is introduced an A4 hatchback and an A4 Coupe, badge them as A5, and badge the new A4 Cab as an A5 as well.

The 6 Series is a big wafty GT thats even more expensive than a 5 Series, the A5 is nothing like.

Can people not check the basics before spouting off 'facts'? A simple comparison engine wise will tell you how wrong you are - do you really think a car which starts with a 1.8T petrol or a 2.0 diesel competes with the 6 Series, where the smallest engine is a 3 litre and most of them are V8's?

Also - price - A5 3.2 Quattro S-Line? £37k.

BMW 630i Sport? £59k! It's over TWENTY THOUSAND QUID more expensive.

I am lost as to why you think the A5 is a 6 Series rival. Did you just guess?

They stopped making the A4 Cab? I didn't know that :O. But you're right I've only seen the new A4's as Saloons/Avants.

I always thought the 6 Series was up against the CL Merc? I'm probably wrong though.

Yes, the A4 cab died when the A5 cab appeared. It's just a rebrand really.

The 6 hasn't really got a Mercedes rival. The CL is an S Class Coupe, the 6 Series is positioned just above a 5 Series. I guess the CL is closest but the CL is more wafting, less sporting, and more luxurious.

I wasn't aware of that. So naturally I assumed the introduction of the A5 was to try and get some of the 6-series market.

I don't really understand why you'd naturally assume that. It's significantly cheaper. Even if you just look at the model names, last time I checked, 6 Series was a bigger number than 5 Series but A5 was a smaller number than A6.

Just for peoples info, Audi Q7/Q5 will only the 'Q' cars as they got into a dispute with I think Nissan over the 'Q' branding.

I wouldn't be surprised if Audi made a A9 to go up against the Bentley Flyingspur or even a Maybach.

Well I couldn't imagine Audi building a car to rival themselves so the natural assumption was it was to rival the 6-series or else they'd have built a car with no real catergory to fill. Clearly as you've pointed out I was way off the mark.
