Sony's latest financial results reveal that worldwide sales of PlayStation 3 now stand at 38.1 million units, following 2.4 million sales of the console in the company's first quarter, which ended 30th June 2010.

Microsoft announced a few days ago that Xbox 360 has shipped 41.7 million units worldwide, although it has had a year longer on the market than its main competitor.

2.4 million sales of PS3 in Q1 represents a 118 per cent increase on last year's 1.1 million sales, although things weren't so rosy for the PSP, sales of which declined slightly to 1.2 million compared to 1.3 million in the same period of 2009.

The mighty PS2, meanwhile, sold a sterling 1.6 million units.

Money-wise, the Networked Products & Services division, of which games is a component, saw sales rise 32.4 per cent to 325 billion yen, of which games contributed 142 billion yen and PCs the rest.

Despite the global economic recession as of late, it seems our dapper gaming industry has been surprisingly resilient given that they are relatively expensive pieces of consumer hardware. The thing that stands out to me is that despite the year-long head start and a much more generous launch pricing and lineup, the 360 has only sold 3.6 million more than the PS3 so far!

Long legs for both consoles that's for sure. I'm surprised they both sold more than 30 million to be honest, I didn't expect it to be so high. I still remember the bad old days of 'first to 10 million wins'.

With India China and other new consumer classes arriving there are simply a lot more people who can afford these things. I think that that is also the main reason that the consoles are on a 10 year life cycle, if you get the chinese/indian consumer class hooked on gaming, when the next generation is released you've immediately got a much bigger market.

For me the most important news is that the PS2 is STILL selling in the millions! How many units has sony shipped?

accurate as of March 31, 2010:
Wii - 70.93 Million Units
Xbox 360 - 40.3 Million Units
PlayStation 3 - 35.95 Million Units

Nintendo DS - 128.89 Million Units
of which Nintendo DSi - 17.82 Million
of which Nintendo DSi XL - 2.08 Million

Woah, that's some lead! :eek::eek::eek::eek:

I'm surprised that the Xbox 360 doesn't have more of a lead over the PS3. Considering it's been on sale longer, it's as though they have sold equal. I suppose one factor is that the PS3 is very popular over the Xbox 360 in Japan, and they buy a lot of games!

It's hardly surprising the Xbox sells bugger all in Japan. If you look at Major Nelson's site where he announces upcoming games/demos/DLC and whathaveyou, he regularly says (availability: all Xbox Live regions except Japan/Asia) so they seem to miss out on tons of stuff. With Sony, it's the other way round. Japan gets more content than us.

Im not surprised the Wii has such a huge lead, my mum has one for christ sake! However just like hers im wondering how many of the wiis sold are now sitting under an inch thick layer of dust?

I can see Xbox upping their lead over the PS3 substantially next quarter with the release of the slim though.

Woah, that's some lead! :eek::eek::eek::eek:

Using results from Latest official figures,
PS3 38.1 million
PSP 65.63 million
PS2 148.39 million
Wii 73.97 million
DS 132.04 million
360 41.7 million
(will include first few weeks of US 360S release)

Ninty posted their first loss for along while, Sony posted a big profit, something not right there lol. One other strange thing is that the 2nd biggest selling home console since the start of this gen (360 launch) seems to be the PS2.

I was quite surprised to see that Nintendo made a loss, but talk of their sales plummeting probably points to it. I'd wager development of the 3DS is contributing to it as well...

edit: $290,000,000 loss :eek:

Likely boosted by Sony's decision to remove backwards compatibility from newer PS3s.

I really doubt that, because the backward compatibility in 60GBs was only around for mere months. They removed it faster than you could blink.

I thought that KNiVES but Skipton was referring to the high selling units of the PS2 not the PS3. :D

One thing I would be curious to see is second hand sales. I know I got bored of the Wii very quickly and wonder if others have.

Also suprised at the now fairly narrow lead the 360 has. I only own a 360 now but good to know we will definately have all 3 back in the next gen. Admittedly I hope Nintendo make a bit more of an effort power wise as I believe it would attract a lot of the more 'hardcore' gamers (arguable of course).

Sure 3DS and other projects are sucking the cash from Nintendo's pockets but I shudder to think how much they have wasted on those pointless so called celebrity adds on the TV.
