**** Original Starcraft 2 Thread ****

Ok. I'll admit I'm a n00b at this. However when people talk about build orders and say things like "At 9 put a barracks down", 9 what??? Whats the numbers mean?

Ive heard it on a few replays and seen it on some websites, but I cant for the life of me work out what they are talking about :)

Can't seem to complete mission 3 on Hard (Medium was really easy to be honest...)
On hard the Zerg are just relentless. Any tips?

It's the one where you are waiting for a lift :)

It's the number of peons you have, as you should never stop producing them ASAP, they're an indicator of time.

NickG - regarding the COH vs SC2 argument. This response is meant as a humorous friendly 'down the pub with a pint' discussion .. not an argument or anything .. please read as such ..

I think the bottom line is that we are comparing oranges to apples with COH vs SC2. There should be another category of game invented called 'Speed RTS'. This game offers a 15 minute blast, just a very small spoonful of fun.

That fills a gap for me -- and I LOVE COH absolutely love it. Just being able to think occassionaly 'Its 7:10 and at 7:30 my TV show starts, I can have a pop at SC2'. You could never do that with COH it was always 1 hour plus unless you're playing a noob. 1 hour plus is a proper commitment. SC2 yes can be just a laugh and is more speed gaming, but theres nothing wrong with that.

To use another example .. comparing COH to SC2 is like comparing COH to Total War:Empire. In fact I could use the same arguments you used to big-up COH. 'Empire' has SACKS AND SACKS more strategy than COH.

Lets see if I can do a graph in text to say what I mean.

SPEED RTS

Plants vs Zombies (a 'tower defence' game .. but still technically RTS)
Red Alert 3
SC2
COH
Total War
CIV 4 (actually this is turn based but you get the idea)
Hearts of Iron 3 (the ULTIMATE hardcore realtime strategy. As realtime strategy games go it makes COH look like pacman!)

HARDCORE STRATEGY

So I agree with you SC2 is darn fast-- but just because a game is closer to the top of the list isn't an argument to call it bad by any means. Also COH is actually only just below SC2 on 'hardcore' scale. It's actually, believe it or not, quite an arcadey game considering whats out there in RTS land ..

Yea easyish ..

1) Build another barracks - chug out marines with any money you have. If you're ever got loads of unspent resourtce you're doing something wrong ..
2) Be prepared at the '5 minutes left' mark to abandon the 4 lower bunkers .. retreating to the above
3) Don't bother rescuing the people who are 'surrounded'. The first 2 are easy (get to them by charging 4 marines through .. when you're there its counted as 'success' even though everyone gets slaughtered). The last group that want helping -- leave them to die!
4) With 4 minutes left you should have 2 baracks chucking out soldiers as fast as possible, and by this time at the top of the ramp (give up on the bottom section you held at the start of the missions) at least 6 FULLY LOADED bunkers .. preferably more.
5) Repair/replace your anti-air at the top of the ramp that gets damaged.

And thats' yer lot!

Yeah I find the upgrades help, offensive first ofc.

3) I had no problem rescuing the lot on hard, just keep a force near the first bunker outside and build it up each time. Then, after you protected the lorry, use that force to rescue the guys. The last lot is a trap, but if you are careful you can rescue them and retreat.

Played my first and last 4v4 today. It's so dull! It's just mass and move, and no one seems keen to counter attack or do anything interesting despite me fending off a 4v1 (with a few much appreciated reapers from an OcUKer).

I'll stick to 1v1/2v2 I reckon.

Same reason I dislike 4v4. I really don't like 200/200 battles at all.
