Pick a car from this list

Thread stopped being serious when the OP decided to call an old 530 "sporty"

Im going to go totally off the wall here, but TW what about a Passat CC ?

They handle pretty well in sport mode, look the business, and you can have a semi decent v6 upfront, save LOTS of money compared to the bimmers.

You just ridiculed someone for saying a 530 was sporty and then went on to say a Passat CC handled well. That's like me saying the BNP party are racist so im joining the NF instead.

You are either an elaborate yet unfunny troll or someone who's opinions on cars is on par with my 14 year old female cousin who cannot drive and thinks its cooler to take the Bus because you get to chat to people.

I replaced my daily driver with something "sporty" yet capable on long trips because even though I've got my MX-5 which is unparalleled if I want to hoon like a loon or take a roof-down trip down to the coast on a sunny Saturday, it's nice to have a car which rides, turns, goes and stops well even for more 'mundane' journeys. I can see totally where Fox is coming from - he's not an early morning B-road assassin but that doesn't mean he doesn't want chronic understeer, bodyroll and zero feedback when he does find himself along a twisty road or roundabout. You can enjoy driving without having to buy an Elise :p

The thread never was serious according to you. I appreciate that the 'spotyness' seeps out with age (Hence your reference to it being 'old') but I beleive they top up the sportyness when it gets serviced.

The degree as to how 'sporty' a car is is a matter of personal opinion. Some people think the Zafira 'Sport' is Sporty because it has silver trim and some nice wheels. Me personally, I think the lowered suspension, big wheels, styling and harsh ride in favour of superior handling to the SE variant is 'sporty' but of course this is purely my opinion.

I also think to call a proper sports car 'sporty' is an insult. 'Sporty' is a mild term for more interesting versions of normal cars.

Not only would it be cheaper to run, but the purchase price would be much lower too. They can be had for much less than people realise.

The CC really surprised me when I had one.

I think if you had a fully specced one it might not seem as crazy as you would initially think. There are certainly not hugely abundant on the roads.

This is why I said it wasn't a spec me thread, I wanted a big BMW fight not a suggest Passat thread :D

I was interested in thoughts on the cars mentioned.

Dont knock the bus, i could be on them if i get a ban :)

For me it's a easy choice

335i. I have had a couple. My wife has one so does my dad.

I find the 5 too big and there is lots of time to have a car like that after you have kids.

I don't really see the point in getting a 335d unless you 25k plus a year. If you are going to spend this much running a car why bother to try and save the last 500 quid.

The problem I have is I really want a change however there is nothing on the Market that even comes close to the 335i at the same price point.

The s5 is a good car but it's still around 10k more then the BMW

For me:

335i
The 335i is the better performing car on the list with higher running costs. I imagine it would have a better sense of speed compared to the 330i due to the turbo(s).

330i
The 330i would be a compromise between money and performance (compared to the 335i), would still be an excellent car and more than capable on public roads.

335d
Would also feel quick but I don't think I would be happy with an automatic, also the actual speed is closer to the 330i not the 335i.

530i
I think I am one of the few people who actually likes the E60 5 series, but I am not sure the interior would be as good as the E92? The exterior is not as subtle as the E92 and while the aesthetics are subjective if you don't think it is 'roundly good looking' as the 3 then do you really want to spend £20k on it? Plus older E60s can be had for £10k now and I think it devalues the brand compared to the E92 somewhat.

535d
I prefer the nature of a petrol engine, although I would have to drive a 535d before ruling it out. Many more available to choose from compared to the 530i I imagine. Would rule it out if I couldn't get a manual.

It's a difficult one, horses for courses and all that, go with your gut instinct and I don't think it would be the E60 judging by what you have said.

For me, I think I would go with the 330i as it offers the best package all round. Also if the budget was the same for the 330i and the 335i then surely you would get a much better 330i for the cash?

Is it just me who thinks the 335i SE looks just as good (in the right colour and wheels) as the M Sport version?

Might save a few bob...

It's true of everything except Touring models.

Hmmm. In that case, for some reason, a previous owner has replaced the rear wheels with narrower ones to match the fronts.

*edit* Or the garage that changed the tyres for me just got four 245/40/18's without checking.

I've been looking around online and the rims themselves are supposed to be 226mm wide on the front and 238mm on the rear.

If the rims are the correct size at the front and rear, is it even possible for them to take the same tyre size?

Yes and it comes with the Msport suspension and seats anyway. I've seen a 335i SE with some sort of extra non-Msport kit on it which looks even better than the Msport one.
