Selling your car...

For the first time in my life the car I'll be selling when I change will actually be worth quite a bit.

Before I've always bought my new car and then sold my old car afterwards as they've only been worth £1k-£2k so it's never been an issue.

Now however I've been offered £6k (roughly) as a trade in on my car, but looking at Autotrader the market seems to dictate I could possibly get quite a bit more selling privately - possibly £7k.

Thing is I cannot really do without my car for more than a day or two due to work.

Plus I'm likely to be buying my next car from a private seller due to dealers not really offering what I'm after.

What do people do in these situations. Trading my car in at a dealer and paying more to get a dealer car could easily cost me an extra £2k-£3k on a £15k car... which seems stupid.

I can't easily borrow £6k-£7k for a few weeks while I sell my current car so what should I do

Don't you know anybody that you can borrow a car off for 2 weeks ? If not you could hire a banger.

Being 21 means insurance will be an issue.

Hiring a car is an option but then I'm eating into the money I've saved, plus again insurance is a nightmare at 21.

If it were me I'd trade it in; an affirmative £6k versus a "possible £7k privately once you've had 12 tyre kickers come by and offer you £4.5k", but then I'd be buying from a dealer where you don't want to.. So there is that issue ;)

I suppose the easiest way is to find the car you want, put down a nice deposit, then pick it up in a week or two or four, in the mean time you sell your car privately at an attractive price, i.e. 6-6.5k as opposed to 7k.

Rent a cheapy for a week once you're car is sold.

What happens when I sell my car, then the car I want to buy isn't available for a few months?

Ah, i didnt realise it was something unusual, what is it you are after?

Did you not read my post properly? ;)

Yeah sorry, would it not be dodgy finding a car for say £15k, putting down a £5k deposit and telling the bloke I'd be back in a few weeks with the rest.

What if he just flogs the car, I'd be reluctant to do that myself when selling I think - I'd tell the buyer I'm not prepared to wait weeks and then find out they drop out.

Insuring something on day/temp insure when your 21 isn't going to be cheap. I could end up paying £250 again just to cover me for a month or something!

E92 335i.

Its going to take you a week to find one of those max if you are prepared to travel, just rent a car.

Yeah, tricky if it's private I guess. I guess the only other option is to sell the Bravo and find alternate means of getting to work or something :\

You recon? I'm after a manual with iDrive and leather and not wood interior.

When I look every few weeks on AT/PH I do tend to find a niceish one I'd consider looking at but simply thought it was going to take quite a bit of time to find a good one with the spec I'm after.

Guess I'll just rent or see if I can borrow a car off of someone.

I'm hoping to hit the jackpot and find someone willing to do a straight swap for my Bravo!

I did see an E90 335i SE up for £12k yesterday! 07 plate and had done 108k but still that's £12k for what is pretty much a 3 year old top range 3 series.

If you put a big deposit down, they wont sell it from under you if you find one to keep it a month, i wouldnt do that though, because you dont want it used as the dealers run about in the mean time.

There are loads of them about, sell you're car first.

Not looking at dealer cars though, going to buy privately as the dealers still want a fair wack more for them.

Think I'll just sell the Bravo when funds are in place and maybe take time off work and spend a week looking at cars to buy.

Why are you in such a rush for a £15k car, are you not still at Uni?

Chill out for a bit first :p

Nope, graduated now and all sorted into a job :D

Not really in a rush, just thinking whenever I come to buy I'm going to get stuck with this issue.

This is me chilling out, I did originally want an S197 Mustang V8 but can't get insured :(

So hang on. You've got an 07 plate car, it isnt falling to bits. Don't spend a load of money until you are in a position where trivial things like insurance do not restrict your choice. It wont be long until you can insure a Mustang.

That narrows it down a bit then :(
