Whats the difference between a knot and cramp?

Either way I get terrible discomfort in the back of my thighs. So much so I sometimes feel like jabbing a fork in my leg it gets that irritating!

Cramp is when your muscle goes into spasm and refuses to relax.

Muscle knots are sections within the various muscles of the body that have constricted and create pain that is consistent.

Sort of similar but different if it makes sense?

When I started going to the gym years ago I managed to tear the muscle round my shoulder by overdoing the rowing machine thingy...

Now I have almost continuous aches and pains in my right shoulder and also a few times since I've had spasms so bad that I've gone to hospital or at least spent a week in bed barely able to move! The pain cramps up my whole chest so I cant breathe properly!

I spent a year going to a physoptherapist (who did this horrible thing where I had to lay on my back with her hand bunched up under my spine and she practically jumped up and came down on my chest with her forearm...heard a god-awful noise like each of my vertibrae cracking one after the other!!) who did help but it seems that its healed badly or something as I have to be careful...even once I just leaned over the edge of the bed, while laying on it, to pick something up and that was enough of a strain to set it off!

Just about to get a sports massage done this Thursday! Been getting headaches for months now - or what I thought was a headache. Cervical neck muscles are very tender, I think due to bad posture sat for many hours at a computer. Gaming/Uni Work :-/. Hope it works!

Fix the height of your desk
Ensure your mouse elbow is close to your body and not overstretched
Sitting on your chair your thighs should be parallel with the floor
Chairs with an armrest the mouse elbow should be resting on the chair arm and the arm not overreached

Is it possible to get happy endings with sports massages from hot sports massaging therapist women?

Or do I still need to consult the shadier side of the masseuse industry for this perk?

What's the average cash per session that people pay then? I'm visiting a woman I've used before for a back problem, this time for a neck problem, and her charge was £30 for an hour 2 years ago, and is still the same now.

If you dont want to ***** out masses for a massage etc. I used to get these loads from bad posture at work etc. so I would get awful headaches in the gym, it turned out it was due to muscle knots.
You know the weighted balls they have that are like rubber outside but pretty weighty, get one of those between your shoulder blade area and the wall and roll it around, working out the knot. Works a treat and you can do it before and after any work out.

Just done that with a golf ball.

that must have hurt! :P

Well I did it last night...

Woke up and i have that feeling of an achy muscle that I've worked hard on at the gym. Lactic acid build up kinda feeling?

Think it's a good sign, might of broken it up a bit and all the crap that might be in there could be releasing.

Or something :p

Also had knots between my shoulder and spine went to a physio and it worked did feel good to work them out though expensive. Also another good tip is use a tennis ball to work the knot out.

Also, I thought you couldn't actually get a knot out? I thought you could just treat them unless you got them operated on? Or does that just depend on the size of them?

A knot or myofascial point is a result of constant muscle tension, the muscles are never allowed to be relaxed and this causes the knots.

Massaging and relaxing the knot can help break them up apparently and your body takes care of the rest.

The more pain the better you will feel after :p

The NHS ones are crap they hardly ever manipulate just tell you what excersises to do etc (well thats what I found)

Stumbled across this looking for advice on desk position as my shoulders kill after a few hours gaming.

Muscle knots are often associated with trigger points, these small areas of muscle spasm set off pain signals to the spinal cord which makes the surrounding muscles contract and thus the trigger point worse.

The basic treatment is to inject them with local anaesthetic and some steroid.
As you cant (or shouldnt!) do this yourself you can try alternative methods.
If you press on the point hard for about 5 mins you will render the muscle ischaemic at which point it relaxes and you can passively (not using the muscle) stretch it. You can use cold spray to same effect but you risk burning the skin, so not recommended.

Best thing to do is see a chronic pain specialist.

Were there any particular exercises that would cause the headaches? I know someone that gets some really bad headaches after doing deadlifts, and who spends a lot of time on the computer, so just wondering if it could be something similar?
