Hi there

ive been looking a direct x 11 card for a long time now and have been looking at the radeon 5970 series,
i was just wondering what your takes where on these cards compared with the nvidia "equivalent" series compared to prossesing power etc

The 2 5970's i have been looking at are:

XFX ATI Radeon HD 5970 Black Edition 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-154-XF&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1577

HIS ATI Radeon HD 5970 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card + Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-000-HS&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1577

i have limited knowledge when it comes to overclocking and changing the voltages so i dont think i will bother ... is the XFX ATI Radeon HD 5970 Black Edition specifically built for overclocking etc and if so would u recommend it or just stick to the cheaper ones if i dont intend to overclock it.....

I have also heard that the cards get extremely hot so was also lookin at the http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=WC-060-EK&groupid=962&catid=1520&subcat=1789 and was wondering how easy they are to install and if any water piping or anything is needed to run to them or if they are just a standalone unit

Sorry for the long essays :( but just 1 last question ... when the card starts to become outdate ... no this will take a while :) but what affects does crossfiring them have i believe this would be linking 2 of the same cards togeather ... or am i mistaken ... Is this easy to do or does it require configuring?

Many thanks for taking the time to read through this and ur responses are very much appriciated

Ben

470 trifire will most likely beat the 5970's, 470 SLI will have smoother gameplay than the 5970's, and a single 480 will have higher minimums than the 5970's

I would have to say the XFX card as you get the ***EXCLUSIVE Premium Priority 2 Year Warranty***

Nvidia dont really have an equivalent card to the 5970. Maybe we will see a GTX460 GX2 in the next few months, but I think ATI will have have the second gen DX11 card out before Nvidia release a 5970 competitor. It might be worth holding off for the second gen DX11 ATI cards if you can.

Does he have a board that supports tri-SLI?

Does he have a PSU that supports tri-SLI?

Driver problems with 3x 470 are going to be more of an issue.

3x470 is going to be more expensive.

So why are we talking about 3x470 again?

ok,

1) if he's looking at dual 5970's he'll have at least a 1000w PSU which will take 3x 470's fine, and if he's looking at dual 5970's he most likely has an Intel build which almost all have SLI support

2) how does using 3x GPU's from a company known to have less driver issues have more driver issues than 4x GPU's from a company known to have driver issues especially with crossfire,

3) £245x3 = £735, £423x2 = £846

4) GTX 400's scale considerably better than 5xxx's(as in 60% vs 90-95%), dual 470's are equal to dual 5870's

that's why we're looking at 3x 470's

edit: nvm, thought he was talking about dual 5970's, argument still somewhat sticks for dual 470's though as they only cost a bit more than those two and perform better

90-95% average scaling for a pair of GTX470's ?

A pair of GTX470's don't even close to equaling a pair of HD5870. To hot, power hungry and over priced. Or just plain not fast enough no matter how you look at it.

looked at some benchmarks much?

470's would be about £100 cheaper than 5870's, they're not that much hotter than 5870's, tell me, how high does your 5870(s) get in games? anything more than 65C and that would be classing the 470 as not much hotter seeing as they get in the 70-80C range stock usually low to mid 70's at game load, power hungry, how is 34w more to power hungry? that's about 30p more for keeping it at full load over 100 hours

still think you're argument stands?

Don't bother with dual GPU (either dual GPU cards or Crossfire/SLI) at all unless you have a fetish for problems, power usage, heat, credit card bills or a mixture of all the above.

More importanly, OP, what resolution do you game at?

^^ Oh, and you two, get a room :)

I can see where this confusion has started from, HW91 probably thought the OP said 2 5970, as in buying two for crossfire, when its a choice between two different 5970's

thanks a lot for all the replys guys didnt realise u woudl all get so passionate and defend ur gfx cards honour :P

i game at 1920x1080 :)

so with the black edition the software for voltage tweaks etc will this improve the performance only very minimally? and is it easy to config and not blow the damm thing up :P

and regards to crossfiring and sli this was more for a future thing not to do straight away.... so what i gather sli runs smoother and with less hiccups than cf?
