LOTRO to go 'free to play' in the autumn....

Would this be playable on the following:

Athlon II M300 2.0 GHz
ATI Mobility 4570 512MB
4GB RAM

At 1,366 x 768?

I pop onto this game now and then, on BT Vision BB - ping of 55ms. I'll be honest I was rather shocked at the decent latency as my BB is rather pathetic for everything else :)

Question about crafting, my hunter currently has forestry, woodwork ? and farming ( never used it so far )could i switch them to something else then back again and retain my proficency? or would i need to create another toon which complements the crafting system

You'd lose the proficiency so yeah another toon would be needed if you want to have the extra crafting skills

That depends what you switch to. Let say you switch to armsman. In that case you keep all your woodworking skills. Or if you switch to explorer you keep all your forestry skills.
Tbh for hunter I’d suggest either Explorer or Scholar. Explorer because hunter can port and run fast so it makes gathering wood/ore so much easier and quicker. Scholar because you can make yourself all the oils, scrolls and if you have access to iron, say from your explorer character, then you can make traps as well.

Not really sure about the status of this, it says sign up to see if you gain entry to the Free to play Beta?

Anyway for a complete newbie, what type of character would people recommend. I usually like playing Templar style characters, the old D&D Paladins that were basically tanking healers that could dps the sweet bejesus out of things as well. Since modern mmos don't really have that, I like melee combat, and the idea of making my own armour?

A Guardian with the Metalsmith crafting skill maybe?

Am just looking through the game manual now, assuming I get into the 'beta'. Guardian looks good.

Looks like Captain might be the wow type Paladin, and Guardians the tanks. That about right? What are Wardens like?

I find the Captain an interesting class, they also have a "pet" in the form of an NPC which they can use for various buffs, they also get rezzing abilities and an ability to summon other players to them. Guardians are essentially the tanky types with several aggro gaining skills. Wardens are a very interesting class too, although I'm not sure I would recommend a new player starting with one as the "combos" might seem a touch confusing at first.

Would downloading the high res pack work with that (and then convert to a full account)?

Last time I downloaded it , it just all came in one big package, after that I didnt need to download anything else.

Just make sure that you are getting it from here ... http://www.lotro-europe.com/free-trial.php at lotro-europe.com rather than lotro.com

Otherwise you will end up with the US one (turbine) not the EU one (codemasters)

tut tut posting screenshots of F2P Enedwaith Beta whilst under NDA!

The 14-day free trial will give you unlimited access to the game and not the beta, so you will be playing a version of the game in its current form, not F2P in September.

Platypus: The Beta is on an invite only basis and by signing up to play beta you enter a random selection process between EU / NA playerbase - and the selection process has alsready been through phase 1 and 2, so the likelyhood of getting access is very limited unless you have a gamespy / fileplanet account and access to a beta key.

If you want to be a straight forward tank then choose a Guardian, heavy armour, man or dwarf, shield and wide selection of weapons, good aggro skills, not too bad dps in overpower stance. Warden is a medium armour tank/dps class but a little tricky to master due to the complex nature of its gambit skills but its good fun. If you want full out DPS then champion for melee or hunter for ranged.
