It'll have to be a router that has
Gigabit ethernet ports
True dual-band (Simultaneous 5ghz & 2.4Ghz)

I'm desperate for a new router but I'm waiting for the 4X4 MIMO routers to arrive :).

Probably building your own pc with a dedicated router distro (ClearOS, pfSense etc) and getting an enterprise quality AP like a Cisco.
Could actually be substantially cheaper than top end all in ones, as well as being more flexible and powerful (better QOS and support for transparent web proxying)

Cisco XR 12000 are pretty good.

When I saw the thread title, I wanted to be the first to recommend a ridiculous service provider router. :(

I personally use a old PC with 2 NICs running PF Sense.

Modem > PFsense > switch with wireless access (basically another home router, but not using the routing functions of it).

There is no best router, in clear cut terms like a cpu or gfx card, it depends on personal pref and use.

When money wasn't really an issue, I used to swear by Vigor - I haven't used any of their more recent ones but I gather that the Vigor 2820 is pretty good and it can also function as a printer sharer which is handy.

Im using 2 routers at home, Netgear DG834GT (best £7 I ever spent) and a Cisco 1720, also will be implementing a Cisco 1600 soon so will have 3.

The Netgear obvisouly being the main internet breakout router.

What on earth for

Im building up my lab, the cisco routers are doing internal routing, the only router I have have doing routing between the WAN>LAN is the netgear, also my Cisco 1700 is being used (well will be when I get it set-up properly) to perform Generic Traffic Shaping to the devices at home to stop people hogging all the bandwidth.

Hate threads like this, they just highlight how daft the general public are.

Consumer routers and "best router" do not belong in the same breath.

Like DJMK4, I have multiple routers, 4 to be precise. 3 of them Cisco kit, and all of them differently specced to get a chance to play with different features and implementations.

Yeah, I see your point - i think he means best "home ADSL/SDSL router"; we're not going to delve into 6509's, 4506's etc and my new toys, the Nexus 7000's :) I do love my job!

The Cisco 892 i use at home is a great router; 8 port PoE etc which i use with my 2 x IP phones (7925G and a 7960) but if i didnt need PoE i'd probably drop down to something a little smaller.
