Alien Swarm - free Valve game

Wasn't really impressed by it at first, but when I got a bit further in and unlocked some more entertaining weapons (flamethrower) I found the game much more fun.

It's brilliant for something free, and who can say no to a free TF2 hat? :D

Is there any way to move the reload bar more centrally on the screen? Above/below your character would be awesome. Also, has anyone played this with a 360 pad? What's it like?

Cheers,

Su

I've recently been playing this with the 360 pad and actually prefer it controlled this way as imo it's almost meant to be a console game. Feel more intuitive using this control scheme too.

Give it a try, map some of the keys correctly (like the pick up key!!) and it's pretty perfect

Just played this in offline mode, pretty cool :) Especially as its free

Do you guys play together then?

A little.

I've been trying the speedruns of late with a couple of others....and finishing off my final levels after the third promotion.

Exciting stuff.

I am completely new to mapping and its taken many hours to get this far. I still have a lot of work and more honing my skills before I release this map.

I asked on 2 different forums how to make this alien climb the cliff but no one could help much; apart from someone insisting there was an example in the SDK after I already looked for it.

Its not as simple as a copy n paste, you have to understand this function and a larger function and consequently only copy the relevant parts. I'm talking about the way valve implemented the cargo elevator platform with a stationary elevator and moving walls + aliens moving on those walls too.

I think there is going to be a lot of user made content, and its pretty easy to download, just an external link from within game.

Christ i hope they nerf the Flamethrower soon.

Its getting tiresome seeing people solo entire levels purely because the Flamethrower renders most of the basic enemies useless after a single shot so they can just run rings around everything. Not to mention those servers modded with instagib Tesla.

Play on insane - flamethrower is nowhere near as effective.

True, but i'm waiting till i hit lvl27 3rd prestige before i do that, only about 7 levels to go.

Only 2 kill achievements i need now are Grenade Launcher (which shouldn't be too bad) and Tesla (which is nigh impossible now they nerfed it). Incendiary Mines are pure awesome though, at least on Hard/Normal.

Insane all the way to level up, +40% xp bonus. However I wasn't leveling up just playing the game, easily made it to 27 3rd merit.

Inc mines rock on insane too in the right places (e.g. the start of the cargo lift level).

Bad luck re the Tesla. I got it before the nerf luckily - I tried it as soon as I unlocked it and didn't realise just how broken it was until I then tried another weapon and thought 'wtf'.

Pff, +50% over Hard maybe, but only an extra 20% with a much higher chance of failure, especailly at low levels, I think i'll take Hard for exp. I'm not really experienced with public Insane games but i can't imagine they're upto much.

They're great on the Surface Bridge too, especially the first 'defence'. 1 outside a door thats welded and the other inside deals with 80% of the enemies that attacked, leaving you the 1 window. I just rarely play officer though... tend to use only Special Weapons or Tech.

Yeah...I'm a Wildcat whore myself. PDWs or shotguns are nice...

If you mean the hacking area yeah, I can see the advantage. We tend to speed run that bit though - two hold up outside at the entrance to the bridge whilst the tech and one other get inside and stim + hack quickly. It means they can get out before the worst of the horde block you in, letting you avoid killing a lot of them (though the two holding up outside obviously need to be on the ball).

I don't tend to play public games though so may experience is probably slightly different.

Quite :p

I must say i'm not too keen on the PDW though. They burn through ammo very quickly and using them just means i have to constantly check how many bullets i have left so i don't reload at an inconvenient time. Good weapons but feel a bit more like a chore than the Twin Pistols.

Only major problem with playing Hard/Normal so much is i know what setups (roughly) are effective for which chars and the whole thing changes on Insane where it turns out you can't 1 shot the basic alien after all and you get raped ><

Absolutely..It was quite painful making the switch to insane (only did that on Saturday..I'm about halfway through the missions now). The game is so much more rewarding to play now though - we really have to work together and play tactically. Before I could Leroy around with wildcat and shotguns/pdws.

The PDWs are only really decent if you take two sets of them. That stops the ammo being such a massive issue and lets you really take advantage of them having the highest damage output (per second) out of all the guns :)
