The Human Race 'Must Colonise Space Or Face Extinction'

It will happen at some point which will be plenty of time before the sun/earth explodes, even with no intervention capitalism will do it eventually, even if it is simply tourism at first. The question is do you divert taxes into speeding it up when there is so much other stuff that needs the money.

There needs to be more reason to go into space really. We have Governments paying for it simply for scientific research, increasing technology and national pride. The commercial sector is slowly developing with companies making rockets to blast satellites into space for various businesses and also space tourism and some research but that is about it.

We need something to be worth the effort like mining the moon for profit, solar sattelites or more valuable research that can only been done in space. Until then then we can't rely on capitalism. Which means it has to be Government funded and as we all know is inefficient and costs loads.

I like the idea of the international space station, with various parts being made by different countries. I would like something similar to happen for a Mars visit or moon base but it will take a lot of cooperation or perhaps the USA/China are rich enough.

basically what you want is a race of drones in space, with human faces, to perform basic maintinence instead of to maintain the spirit of what being human is all about? why not create clones of engineers for that role, again see film: moon, as reference material on this idea! its quite compellign really.

You're saying astronauts are drones?

They're a collection of the most physically and mentally fit people on earth.

They're a lot smarter than most people and have all that "heroic" bs you talk about.

Plus what's more human than risking your life just to see the earth from space?

why not create clones of engineers for that role

because a clone doesn;t know everything the person knows?

And like i said take a few thousand embryos with you so you have much more diversity.

The 32 people are just the construction crew and caretakers.

You couldn't breed the human race back from 32 people anyway.

Are we smarter than yeast? Look at climate change for example, that's a potential ELE - many scientists say so, most world leaders agree

No they don't .

I don't think anyone thinks climate change will kill us all, it will potentially kill hundreds of millions (possibly billions) but mostly they will be the the poor and the unfortunate.

There will still be billions left.

ALso the climate will change on it's own eventually, we'll probably cause more damage if we try to artificially maintain the current climate as it is.

You're saying astronauts are drones?

no the task you described seemed to be one ideal for drones rather than humans.

we only use humans to do this currently because we dont have drones that are complex enough and we value human life much lower.

Yeah it is thought that we might be in an ice age now were it not for agriculture

At a meeting of the American Geophysical Union (December 17, 2008), scientists detailed evidence in support of the controversial idea that the introduction of large-scale rice agriculture in Asia, coupled with extensive deforestation in Europe began to alter world climate by pumping significant amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere over the last 1,000 years. In turn, a warmer atmosphere heated the oceans making them much less efficient storehouses of carbon dioxide and reinforcing global warming, possibly forestalling the onset of a new glacial age.[34]

Complex physics, mechanics and electronics are drone work?

So why is it only the very intelligent become these people?

No we use humans for this because it's the whole point (than and anything smart enough to do it would be our master not our co worker) of space exploration.

As recently as the Toba eruption humans almost died out. The genetic bottleneck suggests that the human population was reduced to around 1,000-10,000 breading pairs 70,000 years ago.

Almost an extinction level event:

We have seen that the bottleneck could have reduced mankind to as few as 40 females plus their menfolk and children.

Also about the clones, Just because our current level of cloning is so basic it does not rule out that the brain could be copied and duplicated as a snapshot after all it is just electrical signals and chemicals.. or is it!

dun dun der!

The only way we face extinction is through our own stupidity with over population. Its out of control as it is, and its only going to get worse.

If we do make it the 5Billion years until our Sun explodes, then we will have done well.

We really need to develop nuclear propulsion if we are serious about space exploration. We might get away with using chemical rockets for taking people to Mars, but beyond that the scale of vessels required need to be orders of magnitude greater. Scramjet technology might one day mature and allow us to take material into low Earth orbit at a much lower cost than today, but it provides no propulsion beyond the atmosphere.
Nuclear propulsion doesn’t only allow launching gigantic spacecraft (8 million tonnes with the tech available in 1958!) but also provides a means for them to travel great distances through interstellar space relatively quickly.

The Saturn V is still the largest chemical rocket to date.

Well there's one way you could help ;)

But anyway over population wont make us extinct as soon as we reach the point where we can not produce enough food people will die off until we are once again at a number we can support.

I know I know. Spread my seed and get my DNA out there.

Dont worry, im on the case ;)
