furthest you've driven in a day?

I drove 1075 miles in one day the other week.

Rotterdam to the East border of Hungary through Germany and Austria. First time I've done a trip like that. It was fun, and the Autobahn was awesome :)

Driving time was 16 hours. Total time for the whole trip was actually 17 hours 40 mins due to the fuel/toilet stops and the fact that the German border patrol held us for at least 30 mins just before Austria to check our papers! I crapped myself at the time because I'd just been overtaking a long line of vehicles at around 110mph and had pulled back in, when an apparently normal 3 series estate pulled alongside and started eye-balling us. Next, it zooms ahead, slots in front and the back window lights up with "STOP POLICE" in red! First thing I thought was that I must have somehow missed a speed limit sign or something but luckily not :)

According to GPS, average driving speed was 65mph as unfortunately we got caught in a fair bit of traffic in Germany and there were a surprising amount of 80km/h (50mph) zones due to road works. Maximum speed was 121mph and this was sustained for several long parts of the Autobahn until we hit traffic. Our speed limits on UK motorways and the punishments that go along with them seemed a bit farcical after that. Would love to go back and try with a real engine sometime.

Does it really matter?

We're replying to a thread about distances travelled. Discussing locations (travelled to and from) is an obvious subject which will be covered.

Here's an example:

San Francsico to Las Vegas - it didn't look that far on the map.... :o I think it was a good 10hr drive :o

Only 1 way though and we swapped drivers. We went back to LA after a few das in LV.

I think it was nearly 600 miles one way to LV!!

Is better than saying "I travelled 600 miles."

Valencia to Farnborough after breaking down for 4 days at the end of a tour with the band.

2 of us actually shared the driving. Started off at lunchtime one day, faffed around backwards and forwards to get the van, drop off the hire van, transfer the kit, get on the road, get lost, back on track etc.

Took 24 hours.

You gotta be joking me, right?

3 days of driving 2,600 miles (With accomodation each way) and then a ferry is cheaper than a flight and a hire car?!

You can rent a Fiesta or something from Hertz for 100 quid a week!?

How does it make sense to drive to Cyprus, its miles!

The plan is to take a car out there to leave at the villa permanently.

two longest trips in a day for me are:

Exeter to Port Glasgow and back (via Kettering on the way up) 22hrs 1045miles

Kansas to Knoxville 19hrs 989miles

Cheshire to the Nurburgring - around 600 miles, set off very very early on morning and arrived in germany in time for a steak for tea, i was 100% dead though, i did this in a Mk2 MX-5 and it was just too much in such a car.

Used to do Cheshire to Aberdeen quite a bit, that 370+ miles.

Cornwall to Portugal.

Well, not strictly true but Santander to Algarve in Portugal in one slog.

1067KM or 663 miles to us British!

Was a nice drive really. The old Mark 6 1.4 Fiesta made it all the way down. What a beaut!

I've only driven from my house to St Helens, then back to my house and then to St Helens and back again in one day. So thats 273 miles in total. :o

Around 650ish miles is the longest I've done, Pittsburgh (PA) -> Newark (DE) -> Boston (MA) and about the same a day later Boston (MA) -> Albany (NY) -> Pittsburgh (PA), in total I think it was around 1300 miles

Unless you are going to spend 6 months of the year out in Cyprus surely the cost of maintaining said half-abandoned car, registering it, keeping it legal over there, blah blah blah is still more than simply hiring a Fiesta from Hertz at 100 quid a week
