Saw this on steam for like £6-7, thought I might have a go but wanted opinions firsts; it seems to do very well in reviews but what games is it comparable to?
I've played dragon age, but for me it was overly complicated and I just didn't find it overly fun, I much prefer games like baldurs gate I and II and champions of norrath was good but that might of been the multiplayer that was enjoyable.
Thanks for any opinions

It is an RPG. but not in the fight->xp->level-up kind of way.

You are in an open world with LOADS of characters in (game is offline only). Loads of missions to do (you can do 20-40 hours easily without touching the main quest!).

The game is very much free roam and with some mods it is even better -my fave are the improved textures and open city gates (no load times).

Oblivion came out in 2006 but don't let that put you off, it is absolutely awesome.

I tried Oblivion on release and got hooked. I cannot say it is like a certain game (aside from Fallout 3 of course) as it is a type of game I had not experienced before.

If you can, get the GOTY edition as it has the expansion on, however the expansion feels 'added on' and isn't a must.

Have you played Fallout 3? They're somewhat similar in how the games work, not surprised considering they're made by the same company and use the same game engine.

Thanks very much, so there is no leveling up? It is the GOTY edition so thats all good. Will have to give it a try. cheers!

Edit - not played fallout 3, might have a go after this one if its good :)

You do level up, but not in what I call the convential RPG way.

Best way is to buy the game and see for yourself.

Awesome game and up there with my all time bests.

Fallout 3 is more of the same but I felt Fallout had some major flaws (like finish the main quest and takes you back to the title screen!).
Don't get me wrong, Fallout is very good, but imo Oblivion is far better.

Oh dear just saw a big pack of games for £50 on steam QuakeCon 2010 Pack. Don't think I'd ever get round to any of them so think ill steer clear. Thanks to all for the advice I'm off to buy ;)

Please forgive me if some of this is inaccurate it has been a while since I played but it should kinda explain it for you.

There is leveling up. But a different leveling up than most games. i.e you dont just need to grind quests/monsters to gain xp to progress your bar then you level up.

But rather, you pick a pre-created class or you pick 3 main stats to use and create class. Each stat governs 3 or 4 skills. The main stats get +10 to each and then each star that is governed by the stat gets +5. Then whenever you use a spell/skill attributed to one of your primary skills it increases the level of that skill faster than it would if it wasn't one of your primary skills, for example if you picked offensive magic skill then spamming a fireballs would increase that skill, likewise if you picked agility then each time you jumped it would increase that skill.

Anyway, once you have progressed enough skills the game will tell you that you are ready to level up, to do this you go to sleep. When you awake there is a level up screen where you can add points to your skills. If you have used your primary skills most to level up then each of these skills will have a +5 (?) next to each so when you click it it increases by 5 instead of 1. This is considered a form of powerleveling because you get the most out of the skills you first picked.

You still have every skill in the game on your char sheet and you can level up everything, but the primary skills will level faster than the rest.

Also the monsters in the world level up as you level up. So you can go ANYWHERE to start with and won't bump in to Mr.Minotaur level 174824 and get owned. :D

Like I said at the start this may not be accurate please don't have a go if it isn't, just correct me :)

EDIT: Bah just typed all that and then saw that you ain't going to bother buying it now!! :D

My memory of this game is a bit hazy (I played it in 2006).
If the enemies level up with you, then what is the point in bothering to increase your level? (Genuine question that I have had for 4 years!).

You gain more than just strength and hitpoints by leveling.

You become better at sneaking and lock picking, opening new possibilities.

Actually you can become a master at sneaking and lock picking at level 1. (and blade and destruction alteration any skill really)

only your major skills contribute to your level the other just apply to the attribute bonus.

That's why if you're going to be a stealthy thief you should probably put maces and heavy armour as your major skills, that way you don't level insanely fast because you sneak everywhere.

if you made athletics and acrobatics two of your mjor skills just running/jumping between two towns would gain you a level or two but your combat abilites would still be nothing so youd get destroyed by the enemies as they;ve leveld with you.

Quite tempting. I bought it when it first came out, enjoyed it but never did finish it. But from what I've read some of the great mods out there require the expansion packs, think I'll pick this up :).

it even pops up saying if you don't want to become a vampire go to a church :p

and after there's a quest to cure it if you want.
