Tell me about the 6 series?

There are various maintenance plans available now to combat the ims issue.

Hartech/Sports and Classic etc.

Sod the RMS let it leak till you change the clutch.

Yes but the guarantee isn't permanent, even these companies know that it'll go eventually, it's just part of the deal with a flat 6 engine. Its one of the reasons mine's getting sold as soon as my warranty is up in 2012. I'd rather spend $30-40k to buy a new one than dump a few grand into a warranty/IMS protection etc, but that's down to one's financial situation of course!

Thanks for the advice, I did look into known flaws with the 996 and it does seem there are hefty repair bills to be wary of but I'm willing to fork out as to me it will be worth it. Of course prefer not to and will get any I intend to purchase thoroughly checked. It is a hell of a lot of money after all.

After looking at the comercial Housey posted I stumbled across this idiot :(

If you're aware of the possible costs involved then don't be put off. Its always amazed me that 911's never seem to age, at a glance a 10-15 year old 911 can still look almost new. A testament to their design and quality of build.

Wait a second, so Housey, is THAT what happened to your GT3? :p You've been keeping a secret!

I know exactly what you mean :)

It was never the cost which put me off, it was the discomfort but hopefully that was just that one car or even me being silly...

I dont agree with that, i dont think they will all eventually go pop at all.

The numbers are very small, its just a nightmare if it does. I know one person in real life who has had this and that was on a low mileage 997.

I agree its best to keep within OPC warranty but this guy only has 25 lumps to spend.

Or for the op, get another 10k, buy a 996 turbo and have no mechanical problems :)

I must be one of the only people who likes the 6 series styling.

I'd consider one if they wern't so much more expensive than the new 3 which appears to do pretty much the same.

The 6 has a bigger boot but those rear seats don't look brilliant and I'd rather have a car half the age, half the mileage and with newer technology than the better interior the 6 would have.

I'm not meaning to make it sound as dramatic as that probably came off. Of course not every single one is going to go bang but it *is* an inherent problem of flat 6 engines pre DFI. The worst affected are certainly the 996's and the '05 997's but like you said, it's only a very small % that actually ever manifest the issue. A friend of mine over here managed to get Porsche to comp the engine, despite it being out of warranty, he just paid the labour ($4-5k).

My mate got a good will gesture for all but 2k i think it was from Porsche here.

You think I need 30-35k for a decent one? There are quite a few within my initial range but would you consider these dogs? I suppose I could I guess, as long as it's justified. But it is a lot more than I was initially willing to part with... :(

When my dad was considering a 635d I found the rear seats to be very uncomfortable. I was gutted (as was he) as I do quite like the 6 series and he really wanted one, but he couldn't live without decent rear seats as the family live a good hour and a half away - where as it'd be bad enough just going to a restaurant down the road going on my (limited) experience :(

I think 30 would get you a very nice one. And try a tiptronic please, they suit the turbos more than the manuals in my opinion.

Sublime is the word for a tip turbo.

I cant stress the inspection enough though, Peter Morgan saved me 2 disasters waiting to happen in the past. Honestly you must get that done.

Thanks, will definitely try a tiptronic as you said the pedals are not offset and would be more comfortable.

The search begins... (again) :D

The inspection, tell me you absorbed that :)

Out of pure interest would you get most cars inspected now or simply high end stuff and cars with known problems?

Say you were buying an Elise, or an M3 or something else for around £15k-£20k would you get a proper inspection or only on stuff with major documented issues like these 911's?

Porsches in general really, everything else iv always been a bit he who dares wins.

Its worth it for anything that has fairly sizable repair costs or maintenance fees. A few hundred for an inspection could save you thousands potentially.

Fantastically quick but fragile gearboxes and a thirst that sees sub 10mpg around town and sub 15mpg on a run is enough to put me off. That sort of fuel consumption is just unbearable if you use you car for 300 mile a day journeys. The cost is one thing, the constant stopping for fuel would really pee me off.

scrub that from the list then :p

I've seen a couple of m6s being used on the track, they looked like they were having a hoot on the straights but I don't think they were the best track toys. Would be fun for every day driving though.

In that price range have you considered a z4m?, coupe looks the best but personally I'd miss the roof down fun of a roadster. Good for some track fun and usable every day. Not quite a 911 though.
