Tomshardware - "Russian" HDD reliability review

Interesting read - but the seagate drives are skewed a bit by the marketshare and the issues with the 7200.11 drives which were abysmal - but not a good indication of seagate drives in general.

Interesting from Hitachi and confirms my thoughts and experience - they are the most reliable.

I've just sold a 5 year old Hitachi 160GB HD which is still going strong and got another 3 year old 320GB HD which is also working fine.

I just got a 1.5tb 7200.11 drive today. Hoping for the best! All the problems were reported on the xxx340AS drives though, and this drive is a xxx341AS, so I'm hoping it'll be okay...

It was cheap anyway ^^;;

Fingers crossed as I've never had a problem with a Seagate drive apart from an OLD 120gig that died after about 5-6 years (so it did well :P)

Tbh they're very quick mechanical components which for the most part in peoples' machines, endure a lot of stress. They're bound to fail in quite large numbers as time goes by. These studies are interesting but unless they're constantly reviewed again and again there's else useful from it.

This is why backing up data is so important.

True,

what kind of back-up program do you use Greenlizard?

I just chuck my important files onto a DVD.
