Galaxy S or Desire not amoled

How many actually use Sense or Touchwiz anyway on both those phones i always used launcher pro as its was better.

For me between the 2 the choice is simple Galaxy S bigger superior screen, Dedicated gpu for gfx so much better again, the 720p on the Galaxy S is 30fps instead of low 20's on the Desire so another winner for the GS, i have owned these phones and the 720p on the Desire is woeful.

The Desire was a sweet phone 3 months ago and still is but there is a better android phone out now but maybe you should wait for HTC to release the Desire hd and see how that is its due out soon.

In the past week we have had “Leaked” information on the handsets spec which reveals that the HD will reportedly sport a the same 1GHZ Snapdragon which features in the current HTC Desire but will come pre running Android 2.2, it will also have a 4.3inch WVGA screen, 8 Megapixel camera with LED flash, SRS surround sound and auto face-detection and finally to get its HD tag, the updated Desired will also sport HD 720p video capture.

Now the specs on the Desire HD do seem very similar to the HTC 4G EVO handset that is currently on release in the US and if the Desire HD is released here before the EVO it would be hard to see the EVO ever coming to our shores… but we won’t shed too many tears over that as yet another leak (a video this time) has revealed that the Desired HD certainly isn’t lacking in the looks dept.

True, but LauncherPro blurs the definition with its own widgets and effectively does the same thing. In fact I use Home Switcher to directly move between home apps, TwLauncher-LauncherPro-ADW.Launcher.

The latest LauncherPro has its own directly resizeable scrolling widgets - messaging, calendar, bookmarks and contacts. With my SGS, can't say I used the TouchWiz interface for more than a few minutes before installing LauncherPro and I prefer it over Sense on my (wife's) Desire.

Imo it is about the hardware. The SGS isn't perfect, firmware has a ways to go and as good as the Desire is and it is a great phone. But for me the SGS screen alone puts it way out in front.

It doesn't do the same thing because you're still running Sense in the background if you're running LauncherPro on a Sense ROM.

If you run LauncherPro on a stock Android ROM, you will lose out on HTC's better email application, better contacts application, better camera application, FM Radio etc.

Don't get me wrong, I love LauncherPro - I have paid for the plus version but for me it's pointless running it on top of Sense because I'm not gaining any extra core functionality (I say core because I know LP is more configurable, can run skins and do home portrait mode) at the cost of resource.

Until someone shows me an Android game or application that's slow on the HTC Desire but smooth on the Galaxy S - then the extra GPU power is just for show in reality, gaming on Android is pathetic compared to the iOS platform, that's probably why the extra GPU power doesn't really mean much.

720p - a show off feature and wouldn't be bothered if the Desire never had it, I've only ever recorded one video as a test, if people are really serious about portable HD recording, they should get themselves a FlipHD recorder.

My Dad has a Samsung Genio Touch, I gave him my 4Gb MicoSD card that came with my Desire with some music on that he wanted. The Genio Touch and the Galaxy S both felt the same in my hand, i.e. plastic and cheap. The Genio Touch is less than £100 SIM free! That's just wrong in my opinion.

I only did a few videos on the desire but that was down to the god awful quality of the video the 720p is a joke.

The point is though you carry your phone with you everywhere you wont' carry a portable hd camera, the Galaxy S does a great job of recording HD much better league to the desires, i took a gamble and tried the I4 and i wouldn't sell it for any of the current android phones, ( 2 of which i have owned Desire/GS, best part of it i sold my GS on the bay for £405 used.

Have to agree with you on the gaming side i was amazed the difference from Android to IOS so much choice be it games, apps very pleased with this atm and being able to touch focus while recording 720p is a bonus.

Personally I prefer the Desire due to Sense UI, the much better community support, the camera flash, the build quality and the new HTC Sync software. If I was paying for either then it would be the HTC for me.

Exactly, there is no clear cut winner, many people wouldn't be that bothered about the screen and would want far better software they can use.

It varies from person to person.

I do agree though the 'HD' video recording on the Desire isn't good at all, the iPhone 4 for example is far better from a media perspective.

I would still hold out and see what HTC's new phone is like if anything it will drive the prices down on the Desire.

Better in what way??
You do know the resolution is not 16:9 and more 3:2 on the Iphone 4 so anything recorded in HD won't run full screen with have black borders top and bottom and if stretched the picture will be cropped.

Better FPS and better image quality.

I guess you got a point there.

I got to say though that the Galaxy S Super Amoled screen is just amazing.
Currently it is the best phone for viewing videos on imo, in fact it's probably the best phone money can buy on the market at present.

Fantastic screen with which to view non-flash photographs :p.

I do like the SAMOLED screen, very much.

However, the Retina display on the iPhone 4 has impressed me the most out of all the new screens.

I didn't expect it to be that good, but its extremely nice.

Looks like Paul at Modaco is finding the Galaxy S to be pretty poor build quality wise:

http://android.modaco.com/content/s.../quality-of-finish-on-the-galaxy-s-epic-fail/

Also Trusted Reviews, say the same thing:

However, it's a different story when it comes to build quality. Again, the front is doing okay. Its single piece of glass that covers the screen and bezel feels tough and should resist scratches well, as should the metallic rim around the edge. However, the back is finished in glossy plastic that scratches easily and flexes slightly, just taking the edge off any feeling of quality. Also adding to this general impression is the lightness of the device. Although a weight of 121g isn't considerably lower than many smartphones, on such a large device it makes it seem a bit flimsy.

So if having the best screen technology and hardware that doesn't allow the Galaxy to do anything over and above the HTC Desire apart from score better benchmarks, whilst being encased in flimsy plastic - then go get the Galaxy S.

Personally, I wouldn't spend £400 on something that has such a cheap housing.

Indeed, Samsung need to learn that a quality finish to the phones housing is important.

The Desire has a nice feel to it, and the iPhone 4 is a joy to behold. (Slight over exaggeration but it feels like £600 in your hand, and so it should)

I don't like Samsungs super-Twitter advertising either. You know they'll be on it soon saying 'We're so sorry for that Paul, it must have been a one off, there's a Galaxy S in the post to you now'
