True, but LauncherPro blurs the definition with its own widgets and effectively does the same thing. In fact I use Home Switcher to directly move between home apps, TwLauncher-LauncherPro-ADW.Launcher.
The latest LauncherPro has its own directly resizeable scrolling widgets - messaging, calendar, bookmarks and contacts. With my SGS, can't say I used the TouchWiz interface for more than a few minutes before installing LauncherPro and I prefer it over Sense on my (wife's) Desire.
Imo it is about the hardware. The SGS isn't perfect, firmware has a ways to go and as good as the Desire is and it is a great phone. But for me the SGS screen alone puts it way out in front.
It doesn't do the same thing because you're still running Sense in the background if you're running LauncherPro on a Sense ROM.
If you run LauncherPro on a stock Android ROM, you will lose out on HTC's better email application, better contacts application, better camera application, FM Radio etc.
Don't get me wrong, I love LauncherPro - I have paid for the plus version but for me it's pointless running it on top of Sense because I'm not gaining any extra core functionality (I say core because I know LP is more configurable, can run skins and do home portrait mode) at the cost of resource.
How many actually use Sense or Touchwiz anyway on both those phones i always used launcher pro as its was better.
For me between the 2 the choice is simple Galaxy S bigger superior screen, Dedicated gpu for gfx so much better again, the 720p on the Galaxy S is 30fps instead of low 20's on the Desire so another winner for the GS, i have owned these phones and the 720p on the Desire is woeful.
The Desire was a sweet phone 3 months ago and still is but there is a better android phone out now but maybe you should wait for HTC to release the Desire hd and see how that is its due out soon.
In the past week we have had “Leaked” information on the handsets spec which reveals that the HD will reportedly sport a the same 1GHZ Snapdragon which features in the current HTC Desire but will come pre running Android 2.2, it will also have a 4.3inch WVGA screen, 8 Megapixel camera with LED flash, SRS surround sound and auto face-detection and finally to get its HD tag, the updated Desired will also sport HD 720p video capture.
Now the specs on the Desire HD do seem very similar to the HTC 4G EVO handset that is currently on release in the US and if the Desire HD is released here before the EVO it would be hard to see the EVO ever coming to our shores… but we won’t shed too many tears over that as yet another leak (a video this time) has revealed that the Desired HD certainly isn’t lacking in the looks dept.
Until someone shows me an Android game or application that's slow on the HTC Desire but smooth on the Galaxy S - then the extra GPU power is just for show in reality, gaming on Android is pathetic compared to the iOS platform, that's probably why the extra GPU power doesn't really mean much.
720p - a show off feature and wouldn't be bothered if the Desire never had it, I've only ever recorded one video as a test, if people are really serious about portable HD recording, they should get themselves a FlipHD recorder.
My Dad has a Samsung Genio Touch, I gave him my 4Gb MicoSD card that came with my Desire with some music on that he wanted. The Genio Touch and the Galaxy S both felt the same in my hand, i.e. plastic and cheap. The Genio Touch is less than £100 SIM free! That's just wrong in my opinion.
