At the price I bought the GTX470 even beats the 5850 on value for money lol... I think I will end up with custom cooling down the line tho - the heat isn't bad but the reference cooling is not quiet - even at the same RPMs as my GTX260 it makes a lot more noise.

Where you got this that fermi is overclocking better. I heard someone said architecture allows for increase of x % for x % core oc
but I had 5850 at 1000/1300 and 470 @ 800/2000
On crysis 5850 got 44 and 470 got 40fps. If I push 470 to 850 on core, it still behind 5850, gtx 470 @ 850 core clock gets 41.5
480 might be dishing out more performance compared to 5870 when overclocked but 5850 vs 470 is a different story.
If your worried about noise you'll have to wait for the gigabyte GTX470 SoC 
althought its not really that bad in games compared to intensive benchmarks - personally I decided I had nothing to lose at £223, tho I will probably make the SoC the 2nd card if I go SLI and put aftermarket cooling on this.

A stock 5850 could match or beat my GTX260 SLI with those settings in crysis whereas my GTX260 SLI was a lot faster in pretty much everything else.

If you are worried about noise or temps I got amp! gtx 470 and its pretty cool and fans don't go above 50% (can't hear them at all).

With OCCT with error checker same setting it does get toasty 85C

If your looking to hang on to a card for a while then why not sit tight with your 5770's and wait for 6000 cards ?
Don't go by them crysis fly through benchmarks when comparing performance, I had a 1000 core 5870 and it was close to the 480 in the crysis fly through bench but in game it's a good 15-20 fps slower than the 480 and the minimums are a lot better on the 480 so the same should apply to the 470.
Had to bump the voltage up a little to get 800/1600 stable - it was fine in games at 1.024 but failed OC Scanner (which gets it upto 92C lol - nothing else gets it even close to that). Needed 1.050 to not artifact at 800/1600 tho in OC Scanner.
start using a lot of AA though (I and raven used 8XAA for our tests) and you should see the 470 pull ahead, like my 470 @850 core got ~35fps average and about 22fps minimum @ 1680x1050 with 8xAA, or 30fps average 18fps minimum @1920x1200 with 8xAA, in game it's playable with 16xQ AA
I only have a 1680x1050 (120Hz) Panel hooked upto my gaming PC atm.

I thought 470 is better in some applications while 5850 is in other. Likewise in some games you get higher fps with 5850 while in other 470 gives better performance.

Both correct, it's just nonsense for the most part.
As for the OP, http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-148-XF&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=411 will be the best card to get for the £200 price mark. With 2 games making it even better value. Performance wise, they're ver similar, so there's no point in spending more on the 470.

SSD would only help if the stutter is due to HDD access and thats generally only the first few seconds after loading.
Personally I say grab this while its cheap http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-135-OK&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1810 offer ends mid-day monday... grab MSI Afterburner and clock it to 800/1600/2000 w/ 1.05-1.087 volts and watch it fly the only caveat being it can get a bit noisey.

the only caveat being it can get a bit noisey.You can always grab that 5850 kylew suggested, use MSI Afterburner and clock it to 1000/2500 w/ a small increase in volts (1.087 to 1.2V - less than 10%). It won't be noisy too!
Oh well, laughter aside, both cards will serve you well. I would have a hard time deciding these days (when I bought my card back in September 2009, I wasn't even sure if the Fermi gets released by 2012).

SSD also actually helps prevent stutter in games from what I'v noticed.
