What do you think will be improved from previous ATI GPU's?

do you think there will be a massive fps boost for gamers?

Think there will be a massive leap from 5970?

What would you like to see?

My gut feeling is that the 6870 will be marginally faster than the 480, but that'll be it.

After a whole year, I really can't see that happening. It'd be incredibly stupid of them to do so. The 480 is already marginally faster than the 5870 anyway.

Marginally faster than a 480 is 5890 territory.

What do you think then?

The 6*** series is just a stop gap measure till Northern Islands (the proper follow up) is released next year, that's where (hopefully) we'll see the big performance improvements.

I don't think the 6 series will be such a big leap as it is still going to be on a 40nm process apparently but the 7 series should be on 28nm so that is when big gains will be made. It's just an opinion though and I am sure many will disagree.

I think there's a lot of scope for improvement. RV670 to RV770 was a big jump in performance, on the same manufacturing process (55nm) and without a huge increase in die size.

With them making a hybrid of Southern Islands and Cypress, it means the performance expectations don't have to be the same. Most of the core logic will be new, except for the shaders. Cypress GPUs have enough redundancy for a moderate shader bump without increasing the die size too much.

With the new core logic, I think it's entirely reasonable to bump the shade count a bit, and then work on the rest of the core with small tweaks and changes to maximise performance. Cypress GPUs currently aren't shader limited anyway, so it means a fair amout of performance can be squeezed out with a moderate shader increase and then additional core tweaks.

The only card that will outperform the 5970 will be the 6970, that much is pretty much a certainty.

The 4870X2 is comparable to the 5870 in terms off performance so if you follow the same pattern for the next series shouldn't it be at the same level (or slightly under) as the 5970? Of course it all depends on how far they can improve on the 5xxx cards as they're using the same 40nm I believe?

The step this time is likely to be much smaller. The 5000->4000 series was helped by moving from 55nm to 40nm, which is would lead to a ~37.5% reduction in die size. The 6000 series will be on the same 40nm process, albeit with some improvements over the last 12 months. ATi got a ~65% improvement in performance by doubling nearly everything on the chip the last time but they cannot do that this time as the chip would be insane: 660nm- some 25% bigger than Fermi.

well the 6870 is to the 5870 what the GTX 285 is to the GTX 280 minus the die shrink

so it shouldn't really provide that much a performance increase

I think the minimum we can expect will be that the 6850 (if it's going to be called that) will at least be between the 470 and the 480.

I think its safe to expect a 1.4x performance increase, hopefully it will be closer to 1.6 with a little more to come after a driver update.
