Copyright and illegal downloads?

He'll probably get the sack although I'm surprised he managed to download it, torrents can't get through the firewall at my work and I'd have thought an ISP would have cracked down on this.

my vote is he'll get the sack, but I can not understand at what point he thought, 'this will be a good idea, whats the worst that will happen'

Definitely going to get the sack unfortunately.

The ISP probably have the logs and ip addresses, etc of his online activity so there is no chance of him being able to talk himself out of it.

Downloading copyrighted material through the company you work for, which is an ISP? Your "friend" is a moron. Think how bad that's going to be if the company who owns the copyrights finds out it's an ISP that distributing. Your "friend" should and probably will be sacked.

You're going to get the finger for misuse of the company IT equipment/network!

This has to be fake. 1) The ISP will have lock downs on the corporate network. 2) No one would be that silly while working at a ISP.

This assumes that 1) the employee isn't someone who can alter the settings on the firewall and 2) that we understimate the stupidity of people.

Remember, if people weren't stupid at work, there would very rarely be any disciplinary action necessary.

Does "your friend's" company have stated explicitly in their IT Security Policy/Acceptable Usage policy that they monitor staff? If not there is sod all they can do and if they try and pull him up on it he can point out that they have breached the DPA by failing to notify staff of the monitoring that is in place, the reason for it and the consequences of it.

Not the smartest move he has made.

If he wishes to crush the film industry, let him do it at home.

I for one like my purchased DVD's with special features thank you :)

They will still sack him, they'll just be more creative in how they do it.

No doubt, but he can then report them to the information commissioners office who take all breaches of the DPA quite seriously and will investigate the company and if found guilty of a breach can fine them or force them to change their business practices.

There's always someone who tries to defend the employee's stupidity via frantically searching for loopholes isn't there...

A smart ISP would probably not set up a firewall just in order to have an easy way to track incredibly stupid employees. It can be hard to seperate the competent from the incompetent sometimes; this would be the perfect trap to get rid of the absolute dregs of your employee base.

I find that an unlikely course of action.

IF he works for an ISP that:

(a) doesn't block torrents, and
(b) doesn't have an IT AUP policy in place

then he's probably better off out of there anyway, doesn't sound like a very good company if that is the case.

Anyway, he's a numpty.
