Copyright and illegal downloads?

I find that an unlikely course of action.

Maybe you do, but its an easy course of action to take - just a letter to the ICO and the ball starts rolling.

Having said that the guy is a moron for torrenting at an isp/work and doubtless doesn't have the brains to deal with this process.... ;)

No doubt, but he can then report them to the information commissioners office who take all breaches of the DPA quite seriously and will investigate the company and if found guilty of a breach can fine them or force them to change their business practices.

hmmm, threatening behaviour to protect the stupid... Can I guess... PCS or Unite?

Not the smartest move he has made.

If he wishes to crush the film industry, let him do it at home.

I for one like my purchased DVD's with special features thank you :)

ags

you sure do... ;)

all those FEATURES lol.

I doubt the ISP will do anything on the copyright side and will just take disciplinary actions which could be anything from a slap on the wrist to losing the job.

Not exactly the most intelligent employee, if I was his boss I'd try and sack him, he's put the company especially an ISP in an awkward position and could look stupid...

LOL sounds like he'll get the sack but, I don't think they will go any further because it could damage the company reputation.

There's always someone who tries to defend the employee's stupidity via frantically searching for loopholes isn't there...

Hope that's not aimed at me, I am in no way defending this idiot. I am however pointing out that a lot of companies have woefully inadequate policies in place regarding the implementation of user monitoring which is clearly in breach of the Data Protection Act Employment Practices Code published by the ICO.

The idiot friend of the OP could use this to his advantage if he knew how to negotiate a mitigation in his disciplinary hearing or take revenge in the event of dismissal.

Again I doubt his friend has the wherewithal to do so...

If you are to up hold the law you must uphold them all not selectively pick and choose them.

Correct, but they know people that are ...

Irrelevant - they don't go reporting people to the police for insignificant incidents that have no bearing on the work they do.

Unless of course you know otherwise..... I'm ok with be corrected!

If he manages to do it three times, does that mean that the ISP gets cut off under the 3 strikes law?

IF he works for an ISP that:

(a) doesn't block torrents, and
(b) doesn't have an IT AUP policy in place

then he's probably better off out of there anyway, doesn't sound like a very good company if that is the case.

Don't be absurd, you don't know what kind of job he does or what kind of connection he was using. I work for an 'ISP' and as well as our corporate network we also have various home routers around the office for testing, well, you know - our service with. These are the same types of connections people have in their houses and if you were stupid enough you could use them to download torrents with.
