I am on a mission of minimalism - but currently failing!

I have a box full of stuff such as:

- PC ribbon cable x 3
- old graphics cards - not sure how old but in perfect condition
- old mouse
- old wallet
- loads more!

What would you do with this stuff? Do you bin? Keep? What about parts to your motherboard? I have 3 boxes that came with motherboards in my PC's and each one is full of bits and bobs relating to the motherboard.

How do you deal with this?

Jon

What is MM?

Keeping clutter or keeping stuff in case it comes in handy. That is the issue. I want less clutter but have difficulty in getting rid of stuff that I might use (but probably won't) one day.

I spent the other day going through a ton of old computer stuff. A pile for the skip and a pile to see what I could do with. Managed to knock together 2 boxes. The rest of the stuff I just took to the skip and binned.

The screws that come with motherboards and cases though go in a few Golden Virginia tins. Despite being quite handy at DIY, I've yet to get a nice wall mounted cubby hole thing with all the drawers for different sized screws. A garage to put it in would be handy as well :D

I sell stuff I'm not going to use again, if it's not worth selling then I give it away or take it to the tip.

MM or eBay, but it's handy to keep one set of "current" hardware in the cupboard, in case you ever have to fault find.

about 2 weeks ago I did this.

Everything went in the bin, old TV, DVD Players, old PC bits, BBC master, VHS tapes, all my school books, bikes old cloths. Anything that has not been used for over 6 to 12 months went to the skip. I was sad to see my old coolermaster HX101 case with clear window go:D

Binned 200 VHS tapes, 3 TVs, 3 PCs (with monitors). Another 100 tapes to charity.

If you don't bin stuff, you end up with my house that's full of crap that will probably never get used. The rainy day is unlikely to come and if it does it'll probably be too old or too forgotten about. So, over the next few months I'll just bin more stuff.

Going to sell a few bits though - laptops in good order etc.

How do you feel now after the binnage?

I don't have a problem with it, you just have to let go of things. I usually pass hardware on but I have a periodic clear-out every four months. Anything that gets selected goes to the re-cycling centre.

I put it all in a box and sold it for £100 quid. The box included enough parts to make 5 computer and there was also a clean SFF Shuttle in it's original packaging. I said to myself that this stuff hadn't been touched for years so I wouldn't miss any of it. If I happened to need something then I'll just buy it again.

When my parents moved we had to get rid of loads of computer kit which had built up over the years. Ended up taking several systems down the dump and donating at least 5 PC's (minus harddisks) + monitors to a local computer club I used to be a member of as they were higher spec boxes than what some of their members were running.

Have about 5 plastic crates of bits and pieces at the moment which I can't face looking through here (plus two spare machines).

I did this last year. I literally wheeled a trailer up to the window and chucked almost everything away. I had accumulated so much utter rubbish. Some of it was probably worth something, but.. meh. All gone.

Way better.

I did similar half a year ago, when I moved. I ended up not taking anything with me except my bed, TV and PC.
