So my first thread here was this:
http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18156660

I actually got a full time temp job over the summer 8-4:30 5.50 an hour. Not bad for a 17 year old.

Earnt 1200 quid but already spent 200 of it.

Would like to keep 100 spare and spend 900 on a computer.

Things I don't need:
Monitor

Things I need:
The system
OS
Keyboard (G11)
Mouse (MX518)

lets just say the total price of the keyboard + mouse is 55 quid.

So basically the budget is 845 quid.

I was looking at i5 build with a gtx 460.

I'll get paid on the 1st of september so will order then.

Opinions please :)

thanks in advance.

Slightly expensive motherboard, however it has SLI and SATA 6gb/s support.

First off thanks.

Would dropping down to the Asus 110 quid one and spending the extra 30 on a case be beneficial?

Plus I'm going to have this for a long time. Second year of college -> last year of uni. I'll probably upgrade on the way. But because of this do I really need full retail win7?

Looking at the i5 motherboards (6gbps) only 2 of them support SLI =/ the most expensive yet all of them support crossfire. That sucks. Lemme come up with a self spec then you can comment.

psu only has a pair of pcie cables, not very sli compliant at all.

this on the other hand does have two pairs,

True, although the Corsair units are usually under-rated so it should still happily power a pair of GTX 460s with power to spare, haven't personally read any reviews of that Sapphire so I don't know how they compare.

edit: Your spec will be fine if you want to overclock but you don't care about going SLI.

the intel chipsets do both sli and crossfire, what's important is that the board offers the same pci lanes to both graphic card slots.

the cheaper boards only run the second slot at 4X speed.

the UD4 in redmint spec does sli/crossfire properly.

Says this on the Asus version

2x PCIe 2.0 x16 Slots
Users can flexibly switch between full-speed PCIe x16 mode for their graphics cards and IO Level UP for rapid data throughput.

very good for a single card system.

Users can flexibly switch between full-speed PCIe x16 mode for their graphics cards and IO Level UP for rapid data throughput.

From the Asus website spec of that board:

Expansion Slots 1 x PCIe 2.0 x16 (single at x16)
1 x PCI Express 2.0 x16 slots (@x4 mode, 2.5GT/s, black slot)
3 x PCI Express 2.0 x1 (2.5GT/s, gray slots)
2 x PCI
* The second PCIe x16 slot (black) and the three PCIe x1 slots share the bandwidth from the Intel® PCH. When any of the PCIe x1 slots is occupied, the second PCIe x16 slot will be switched to x1 mode.

Multi-GPU Support Supports ATI® Quad-GPU CrossFireX™ Technology

has two 16X lenght slots, but the second won't be fully connected.

its marketing tricks, not accurate enough info.

Hmm well that sucks. I was thinking though in the future instead of going down the SLI route I could just go 470/480 or maybe something else when nVidia bring out new cards..

Well I'm more of a fan of single card setups anyway, reduces your electricity bill slightly. ;) And it means you'll have 1 new card with the latest features instead of 2 old cards when it comes to upgrading.

then get the gigabyte UD4 already mentioned, and either the Sapphire psu, or a Antec new truepower 650w, which both have four pcie connectors.

True true.

Just looking. Swapping the i5 + mobo for...

X4 with the lowest 890FX mobo saves me around 30 quid.

So the i5 is 4 cores 4 threads as is the phenom X4.

phenoms got higher clock speed so what's better :S. So much choice.

i5 will be faster in nearly all games, however you *might* be able to use next generation AMD chips in an AM3 motherboard. Hoping AMD will confirm this at the Hot Chips conference this week.

just pick one of the i5 builds above, a small change of psu to the first makes it excellent.

simple.
