I was reversing out of someone's driveway and backed into someone's parked car, damaging their passenger door quite badly. This was just 4 weeks ago. Didn't know whose car it was and it was bucketing down with rain so i waited in the car for a few minutes before taking down the car's license plate and driving a short distance home. Once home, i reported what i had done to the local police over the phone and they asked me to pop down to my local station and fill out an accident self reporting form which i did immediately.

I received a letter from the police a few days ago stating that they (the police) weren't taking any action against me and that they had made the registered keeper of that car aware that i had reported it to the police.

Surely i would have heard something about this by now from the other party or their insurer, assuming that they are insured, or do these things sometimes take a little longer?

was it an old banger that you hit? maybe they can't be bothered with the hassle of getting it fixed.

It may well take a bit longer for the other party's insurance company to get in contact with you although that other party is not obliged by law to report the damage to the car although I would be surprised if they didn't ( assuming they are insured ).

Hats off to you for being honest though.

I witnessed a fella clip another car in a car park a while back and was in the process of driving away before I stopped him to tell him what he'd done which he claimed he didn't. Looking at his car and the other one I found that a little unbelievable.

It was a 2003 Mondeo in rather nice condition; that is before i invaded it's space!!

Thanks. I'd be lying if the thought of driving off didn't enter my mind but i can't live with that kind of thing on my conscience. I'd also like to think if anyone damaged my car then they would do the same. I have protected no claims so if there is a claim then hopefully it wouldn't hurt the wallet too much.

Went to pick up a curry earlier, was going to park right outside the shop but couldn't be bothered as the space on the other side I could just drive into.

On my way out the curry shop delivery car was where I was going to park, and some guy was reversing into the space in front, straight into the delivery car. He had to go in and explain though as he was picking up a curry. and the staff were watching from inside.

To be fair to him, there was some young girl walking past in a very short seethrough white dress and no underwear, which would make accurate parking rather difficult I suspect.

Somebody reversed into my parked car the other day. I came out the hosue and took a look, my vehicle was fine, and tbh even if he had dented it you wouldn't have been able to tell ,, his bumper was well bashed in.

A little update. It's now been 10 weeks since it happened and i've still not heard anything from my insurer or the third party. I would have thought that after this amount of time something may be amiss with the registered keeper and relevant insurance.

you've done all you needed to do, so if you havent heard i doubt there really bothered .

Agreed. You have done everything correctly to ensure the owner can make a claim. If they can't be bothered then happy days. You get to keep your NCB. Just be more careful as next time you may not be so lucky, but I'm sure you realise that already.

I guess i've been a bit lucky then! To be honest i was quite curious/nosey to find out why they didn't put in a claim as it's certainly something i would claim for if it had happened to me; i guess i'll never know. I'm also a lot more careful reversing out in poor weather now!

Last year someone did this to my car. Damaged both passenger doors.

Sadly, no one ever owned up. 4 week old car. 1 x Fault Claim. Fantastic.

Maybe the registered keeper of the vehicle has failed to keep their records up to date; or the DVLA has messed up their records.

good on you for owning up, this happened to me a few months ago. My car was hit as a result of another accident, police/ambulance were on scene however they failed to record the damage to my car. Had to file a police report myself, the police were ment to pass on the accident report to the insurers, but didn't. It is an absolute mess dealing with all parties involved but i feel like its not worth the effort of following up with the insurance company, even if its just to reclaim repair costs as i repaired it myself. The owner of the car may be in a similar boat?

infact i may try to follow up with them now.....
