What makes us want more POWER?

Because my penis is small and I need to feel like a big man.

Power for me comes secondary to the feel-factor of driving and going through the twisty bits as quick as possible. Any chimp can go fast in a straight line :)

Just like a drug really, it's exciting to begin with but you become accustomed to it and need to increase the dosage to keep the same excitement.
In the same way as drugs, it's ultimately just a waste of money and detrimental to your health when you end up crashing.

Nail on head.

It just becomes pointless after a while, you just keep chasing more and more power and in the end it doesn't feel any more 'fun' than when you first got the car, because you get used to it quickly.

And before anyone points out the fact that I'm currently doing an engine swap on my Golf, it's more for the fun side of getting my teeth into a little project, and having something a bit different at the end rather than chasing power.

Okay, but looking the original question again - if you already have this 'driving feel-factor', would you not eventually want more power to improve the feeling?

Most of us in time get used to the experience provided by our cars, irrespective of how good its original abilities are.

Gave up trying to make my cars go as fast as possible because it stopped being fun any more. I found it was more the driving experience that made it fun for me. Being part of the ride. I think the fact that the 'driving experience' I refer to is missing from most modern cars and the fact that you can just keep buying faster and faster cars to fill that void for not much money is probably why.

Yea but it takes a chimp with a massive supercharger to go really, really fast in a straight line :D

Yes absolutely. Power to compliment the rest of the car if it can handle it. That's the reason why I would want moar powah!

Since I've owned an Impreza I've constantly wanted more power - it's more than quick enough with 240bhp but owning such an easily moddable (is that even a word?!?!?) car means I'm constantly tempted by power upgrades, especially when browsing a forum like scoobynet where you see so many similar cars to your own running much higher power levels. I know I don't need any more power but I've become accustomed to having 240bhp under my right foot and now I want more (hopefully around the 300-320bhp mark.) I just hope to stop modding before I empty my savings completely!

The problem is - Once you get to 300 - you will want MORE ;)

Are you going for a 1.8T? Big Turbo?

In a lot of cases (not people here ofc) its because the person striving for the power just doesn't understand the concepts of power and torque, I swear to god I once stopped in a McDonalds car park where a guy with a modded 200sx was trying to tell a guy with a 5.7L Z28 Camaro how his car was much faster cos it was dyno'd at 20hp more, im sorry but that's just not happening lol

It had 20bhp more than the Camaro?

Going to be bloody quick that! Infact I would be leaning against agreeing with him.

it also not as if a 200sx isnt going to have torque either, being turbocharged they tend to have a fair amount too. Also lighter than a camaro as well.

Oh, actually the torque was what I found funny, the SX (S14 btw) was modded to 265hp (I assume as its owner claimed 20 more than the cammy) but even with an extra 20hp it wouldn't have had the torque to beat it surely? or have I overestimated the value of the cammys torque advantage?

If it was a fourth gen Camaro (the most common in this country) and it was a 5.7l LS1 Z28 then it would have been 310 or 325bhp, if it was an older and better looking third gen, 5.7l L98 engined car then it would have been 230bhp as standard, although they still had some 300lbs/ft of torque.

is the camaro slush box and how many gears that may slow it down?

200's tend to have similar torque in lb/ft to their BHP as a rough guide, unless being tuned lots.
