Samsung Galaxy S... highest spec Android phone released... also with QWERTY!

Just bought a galaxy from o2..£355 and will be here tomorrow. I have had my Hero(i shall try and sell it now) for 3 weeks and made the mistake of trying a friends Galaxy:D

Guessed they upped the price, they used to be £320+£10 credit.

Can someone please, please, please help me!

So I have had this problem with my Galaxy since I got it, and it's really irritating!

What happens is sometimes the WiFi decides to switch itself on without me knowing, so it sits there and drains excess battery. Like for instance today, I unplugged my phone at 9, the WiFi was off(I always check) and went to work etc. By 3 I took my phone out my pocket and the battery was at 35% with no use. The WiFi however, had switched itself on, so I had to switch off my phone the rest of the day to save battery.

Has anyone else had this problem? It's really bugging me now.

:(

Turn wifi based location off. Although, it should be turning itself off automatically after determining location.

I'll have a look through the settings, though I don't remember seeing that setting anywhere. Another problem with the WiFi is sometimes it gets 'jammed' so I can't turn it on or off(I think it gets stuck when on), so I have to reboot the phone.

Maybe a firmware upgrade will help? Currently I'm rooted, lag fixed, but using the stock firmware that it came with which is JF1 2.1-update1.

Apart from this ridiculous issue, I really love the phone.

Can anybody recommend me a ROM/Firmware to flash to that may improve stability/performance?

I'm having the same problem!

In Kies it says there's a new firmware upgrade (JM3?), is it any good or should I stick to the firmware that came with the phone till 2.2 comes out?

The new (official XX, not the older leaked XW) JM1+ updates are a great improvement. Personally mine is an O2 phone and I can't update via Kies, I had to play with the register values to get it to offer the update to my phone. I'm still only offered JM1, but its a start.

If anyone is offered the JM3 update could they copy and post the same lines from the register HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Samsung\Kies\DeviceDB after they have connected once via Kies? (BTW IMEI & PN edited to blank)

So got my Galaxy S a month ago, loving the phone so far, but screen does get a little grubby sometimes.

What are the recommeded screen protectors/cases for the Galaxy S?

It will only recognise it with the default launcher. If you plug it in with anything but touchwiz, it doesn't work.

Do you, or anybody else for that matter, know if Rooting and the 1 click lag fix affect the kies connection?
I'm using touchwiz, but have applied those two tweaks and can no longer connect to Kies.
I was able to connect when I first got the phone before I upgraded the firmware to JG5 with Odin.

Cheers
Dan

I had difficulty connecting to Kies when I was using Win7, this was after I rooted the phone and updated the firmware but since I went back to XP I haven't had a problem with Kies detecting the phone and connecting to it.

Very easy apparently. Just been discovered the code can be taken off the phone itself

Yeah ive been on google and just read the whole of this thread!

atm my options are

SGS - £310 - locked to Ornage - new

Desire - Unlocked - £270 - been used but is totally mint

cant make up my mind!

Gonna wait a month or two for it to be cheaper I think.

Just put my G1 onto sim only 30 days rolling.

£15, 350 minutes, unlimited texts booster and carried over my android unlimited internet. :)

Just as an FYI (it has been mentioned a few pages back) for anybody who would like to flash the latest Samsung service firmware via Kies but hasn't quite managed to extrapolate the procedure from the frankly vast array of forum posts over the net on the matter.

It's incredibly easy to do, but those with certain carriers should be aware (Vodafone) that they have explicitly stated it will void your warranty with them (not with Samsung).

Personally I am on Orange and was getting a little tired of the niggles with my phone on the stock JE3 firmware, didn't really wanna go through the popular Odin route, so thought i'd see if I could get Kies to at least give me the JM1 service flash (this is the one service centres would flash if you went to them and said you had problems).

Ok, start-up Kies, connect your phone and put it into Kies mode, then do the following:

1) open Regedit
2) Goto "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Samsung\Kies\DeviceDB"
3) There may be multiple sub-key folders, all named numerically, select "1"
4) Find the key named "ProductCode" and double click on it
5) Change the last 3 digits to be "XEU", so for example, my original code was "GT-I9000HKDORA" cos its an Orange phone, so I changed this to "GT-I9000HKDXEU", ok to save the key change
6) Now, in Kies, click on "Firmware update" and you should now see that JM1 is available.

Then let it run through the upgrade process.

I wouldn't like to say this will be the same for everyone, but in my case it saved everything, all apps, contacts, calendar etc. were all there as I left them when it was on and restarted. Just to be safe you might want to back everything up in Kies first and accept you may have to re-install your apps from the marketplace, or a backup.

Hope that's of some use to some people.

I have found that the GPS is much improved, it gets a WiFi lock much more quickly now and proper GPS lock in Co-Pilot when I'm outside occurs more quickly.

The phone definitely does feel a bit snappier when installing apps etc, and I appear to be able to uninstall the orange apps like Orange maps from the new task-manager app that appeared.

I should say, i *think* my phone was unlocked from the start (some menu I accessed via typing in a crazy phone number gave me a status of "Locked: false" amongst other details when I looked a month or so back) so whether upping to this firmware from a network locked phone will cause problems, I'm not so sure. Though I guess you could always go back via Odin, though it'll be a faff.

Anyway, I thought that might be useful to somebody at least as I found the other info around a bit muddled.

Guys can someone tell me if this phone is fully Unlocked!

I would presume so as everything is off

the code used was *#7465625#

Also whats the Galaxy like for Apps ? i take it i can use the same apps the desire can? i know noob question but my current phone is C902 :P
