Outrage at Headteacher's £200k pay package

If we're going to improve standards in schools then we need to make sure right from the start that good leadership is in place.

Sure in principle but why are these pay awards going to some professions and not others. Do you see individuals in equivalent professions earning this amount? Don't think so. When those other professions are having their lesser pay frozen then you can understand why people get arguably ****** off.

Although I agree with you in principle that such jobs should attract better candidates. I do not agree with the whole - if you make lots of money then it's only fair to get paid lots of money philosophy - because it don't matter how you spin it it is morally corrupt.

Which other professions are you referring to? It's certainly possible to earn £90k pa in Engineering, Medicine, Legal, Accountancy professions if you're good enough (i.e. become a manager ). This guy earned £200k largely because of a bonus which I'm not sure is a regular thing.

I agree with your second point as it happens, I just don't see that £200k for an outstanding head teacher is in any way inappropriate. It's only 8.5 times the average London wage. Certainly there are examples where people do get grossly disproportionate rewards for the work they do - banker's bonuses an obvious example.

The only thing I would add is that it would be right that the other staff at Mr Elms school should also share the benefits of its excellent reputation, without them I doubt Mr Elms would have been able to turn the school around.

It's great isn't it, a public organisation brings in private sector practices (decent base salary and performance-based bonuses), the guy meets the targets and earns the bonuses, and the public organisation is still slated for not being 'efficient' enough.

That is excessive no matter how well he is doing his job. What do they do that a normal teacher doesn't, that warrants such a massive boost in salary?

Having said that, there are so much worse things around that this just isn't worth a mention. Wayne Rooney probably got more in the world cup alone than i will get in my life, yet he did absolutely sweet FA. Don't even mention the manager.

I would say so, yes. They are responsible for the whole school (building, staff, pupils, progress, results, budgets, child protection etc etc). It's a massively responsible job - have a think about how many people it affects.

Ignoring the facts of this case (his salary is £83k pa, the rest of his pay for last year came from bonuses and back-dated pay), why does this article cause so much consternation? Why are we prepared to see massive pay packages handed out to bankers in the City of London (irrespective of whether their bank fails or not) but not people playing key roles in education? If we're going to improve standards in schools then we need to make sure right from the start that good leadership is in place.

It is a school, not a multibillion pound corporation.

£200,000 for a public employee is obscene when the funding of our schools is under pressure, regardless of the positive effect he has had on the school.

He is basically a manager of a small business, and no matter how good a manager he is how many get that kind of renumeration.

Not so sure about this overtime malarkey, my old man is a headteacher and he's never put in for a penny of overtime since he started 3 years back.

[EDIT] Oops, accidentally contributed to a thread revival :/

I work at a school (top 10 in the country) and the HT does a lot of consulting work for Leading Edge/Outreach and the Government.

She regularly goes into Schools in Special Measures for 6/12months sorts them outs and hands them over and even works for the Government every wednesday in London.

She is only roughly £100k-£140k depending on who you believe, she also gets an extra £25k a year for her wednesday Government work (which she donates straight to our schools budget).

She is without a doubt worth every penny, and without her there would be 2 schools in the local area still very much in the crud.

She works 7am-7pm Mon-Fri roughly and her Government work often takes her out of the country as a speaker and to do silly hours.

I want to be a head teacher if I can get 200k

how hard can it be

1) fill in paper work
2) get given xxx budget to spend
3) spend xx budget
4) make sure trouble makers are suspended
5) give good teachers pay rises
6) give no pay rise to the rubbish teachers (and make things as difficult as you can and hope they leave - or sack them)
7) dont do bumb things like giving kids laptops

I mean how do these uber crap teachers keep their jobs?
how do the kids that trash the schools and bully every other kid not get kicked out?

You forgot 4 steps

-3) Do an extra 1 or 2 years of university education
-2) Compete with a bunch of people to land a TA job
-1) Work your way up to teacher (1-2 years)
0) work your way up to Head Teacher (5-10 years?)

The way you put it sounds like their giving head teacher positions to just about anyone who wants it.

I think people are forgetting Head Teacher is the most senior position in a school so god forbid the guy be rewarded for his good work.

Because I certainly dont. Im MORE than happy to see a teacher get paid for doing a good job, than sports people / bankers etc getting paid for doing nothing worthwhile.

In one statement you have shown massive failure to understand how business works.
