As per title, only would like to store W7, the few games im playing at the time and basic programs. Looking to spend ~£150 but could be pushed slightly higher as I'm treating my self for my birthday.
What would everyone recommend? As SSD stats tend to be beyond me...

I would perhaps say, wait for the new Intel drives to come out the end of this year. They are upgrading the 80GB and 160GB to 160GB and 300GB respectively, and hopefully at their current price points.

That is what I would personally do. I don't want to put you off, but you will get more for your money then, and it will be a better treat :)

Hmm thanks, I had been looking at those drives. Question Time on Crucial:
I do not have a Sata 3 mobo, will this affect it much?
Does it come with a mounting bracket? I do not see any hint of it?

SATA is backwards compatible so it will still work with your board.

it'll work yea, but the speed will be slower, or you could get yourself an PCI-E SATAIII controller to give you the faster speed.

Ok thanks :). Looking forward to it now, also ordering a new Mouse + keyboard (MX518 + G11) so I shall have a fun birthday :P.

So will the Crucial drive be noticeably faster than my WD Caviar Black? Or should I look for something with higher write speeds

Yes, you will, installations onto it will be fairly similar in speed, but opening programs, booting the OS etc will be a lot faster. If you think about it, how oftern do you write a lot of data onto your HDD? Hardly ever once you have your OS & programs installed. This is why the limited number of write cycles for SSD drives don't kill them really fast, but instead last for ages. When you boot up your PC, and the OS, and startup programs open (as well as opening programs normally), this is all limited by your read speed, not your write speed.

Depends what you are doing. If it's mainly gaming the Crucial still has the better read speeds (it will deliver 285 MB/sec all day long as that is the limit of SATA II and it's capable of 355MB/sec if you plug it into a SATA 6Gbps interface in the future). If the basic programs you highlighted in your OP require much writing to a drive then the Vertex is faster at writing.

To be fair they are so much faster that what you are used to you will be blown away by either and unlikely to notice any difference between the two in real use.

There is nothing at this price that will come close to improving your PC experience like one of these drives.

Happy birthday ;)

Ok thanks a lot guys for your inputs! I think I have decided on the 60gb Vertex 2E due to the higher write speeds as the read speed is the same as what I'd be acheiving on the Crucial due to my not having Sata3.

I have the Vertex 2E and I chose it because I am on sata 2.
