Watch Buffs Required

4000 was with a 5% discount. I asked for 10% and the guy pretty much laughed in my face...

I'm guessing it'll be cheaper to source in the UK than over here as all luxury items cost a bomb here.

Is there a watch you guys would recommend for around that price that would be a better investment?

I do like the style of Panerai but if it's going to shed money then I don't mind buying a Rolex or something similar. I like fairly plain faces, not too fussy.

I'm going to buy a Hamilton Khaki for everyday use.

As I said, a used watch will hold its value much more than a new one. I don't know what you mean by an "investment", a watch is very unlikely to appreciate in value, if you want a return on your money, put it in the bank.

I'm not really worried about it appreciating I just don't want it to lose 2k as soon as I put it on my wrist.

I guess I'm just after other ideas for watches as my knowledge is limited at this end of the market.

I've got a couple of Oris watches for every day use. This will be my first decent watch purchase so I don't want to buy into a poor brand.

Panerai are as good as anything for holding value , the 104 is always popular as are the base models but they are manual wind

Surely the question of whether it will hold it's value is irrelevant unless you plan to sell it at some point in the future.

I probably will want to sell it in a couple of years and buy a different watch. Shiny new toys only hold their appeal for so long.

Sweet, so based on above advice I'm going to try and source a used one.

If any of you guys come across one in your travels please let me know.

Thanks for your help guys.

I like the idea of expensive watches, but £4,000 for something that looks as basic at that? Usually, watches in that price range make me think 'ohh they're pretty cool' but that just looks... meh.

Just as well you're not buying it then. ;)

The picture really doesn't do it justice either. In the flesh it's a great looking watch.

You dont buy a watch for an investment unless its already a collectors item, and most modern Panerai's sure as hell are anything but collectors items.
If you like it buy it, but £4k for a average looking Panerai with a 7750 movement doesnt float my boat. Also, dont buy brand new, you will take a hit no matter what the brand is.
Have a look at this place http://clockmaker.com.au/panerai.html
Seem to have reasonable prices.

Thanks Panthro, I've got an appointment booked with that guy tomorrow. He doesn't have the watch I want but I do like the green rolex (yes I know I have strange tastes) he has on the site and he said he can source other stuff for me.

Fingers crossed

Panerai do hold their value well. Though particularly base models. I do wonder how long that will last as they are perhaps a bit flavour of the month (OK decade).

Personally at £4000 i would be wanting an in-house movement and would probably be buying JLC (but I just like them) rather than a modified 7750. Nothing wrong with 7750s, I have used them in my watches but they are a £200 movement. Albeit with some modifications here.

Personally I struggle with Panerai's value more than the majority of watches at the same price point. They have ramped up prices extraordinarily - beyond the industry - and they put some very basic movements in extremely highly priced watches, although this is changing.

They do have a lot of presence and if you have an itch to scratch, why not.

I'm happy to hear some alternatives. That's just been the first one that really caught my eye.

It's just a bit different to your submariners and seamasters.

What's the RRP ?

Discounts on Panerais are hard to come by, I got 6% once but even that was difficuly

having said that the 88 is not one of the higher demand models but should still hold value regardless

i can get 40% off Panerai :)

got 40% of my new JLC too :)

Those are some big discounts, how come? Work for Richemont?

I'll have a standard manual wind reverso, steel back with a 40% discount if you can swing it for me;)

& Given that panerais do hold their value well I would be buying as many base models as poss at that price and flogging them on the watch sites all day long - you sure?

Have you looked at IWC watches? I don't much like their dive watches personally, but some people do. I think their pilot's watches are gorgeous, then there's the iconic Portugese, but I'm not sure what one can be had for used.

Nice one, the sub LV would be a much better buy and more likely to hold its value well.

I agree. I find it difficult to comprehend the value of some watches running modified 7750's, even though they are a good movement.

For 4k I would be looking at a proper in house movement from someone like JLC, Glasshutte Original or even (this is my personal choice and not something most will agree on) Grand Seiko.

You cant come on here and say that without offering your discount to the rest of us :p

Grand Seiko are superb but as you elude to, most who aren't properly interested struggle with the brand - unfortunate as it has everything going for it! JLC would be my choice (and is). I would prefer Anonimo to Panerai if I were set on chunky and with a story which starts in Italy. Resale value is pants on them though.
