The text conversation I had with a mate over a courtesy car

Or... We could call it Internet Countdown

"whats that" i hear you say

well, its like normal countdown but on the internet. And extremely dangerous

"why" you say ? Well people could get their feelings hurt by keyboard warriors on the internet :D

Even with a knackered back I'd take the manual 318d over an old Granada!

I'm sure that BMW are more than proud that a current 4pot diesel beats a 2.9i V6 petrol engined car in terms of performance - and probably 0-60 - whilst no doubt returning near 3 times the MPG of the old pushrod heap thats under the Fords bonnet.

I'd hazzard a guess - but cba to check - that the current 3 series has better interior room than the grandad too.

Great cars back in their day - I used to run a 2.9i Scorpio but noticed that my mums e46 318 rode a lot nicer!

Weird friend.

If anybody fancies checking the figures for the 318d over a 2.9i Granada I'd be interested - I think....

LOLing at the BMW boys who seem stunned that someone might post something irrational about a car brand they find perfectly acceptable..

It's not as if they don't behave exactly the same way about other brands, but obviously that's ok then..

:D

Be fair Demon. The "BMW boys", as you term them, aren't normally as bad as they're made out to be.

Which made Fox's cheap, irrelevant shot at my car all the more dismaying, especially given his views on people bring up his car when it isn't relevant.

What a suprise that you should pop in and again post simply about the posters, it's as if you've no interest in cars really :D I've just had a quick glance through your last 7 days of posts and would you beleive it, not a single one is about a car, it's all about the opinions of other people on this forum. Gosh, how strange. Fancy that? Were you an active contributor to car related discussion then I doubt anyone would mind you also holding an opinion on the way others post, but... you don't seem to be. I wonder why you post in Motors if you dont talk about cars..

As I said it wasn't because it was a BMW, that was simply a co-incidence. It was the way the OP was so pointlessly made using a bunch of utter non-points.

I'd have responded in the same way had it been about a C200 CDI. Perhaps I'd even have responded the same way if it was about a Zafira diesel..

Oh I feel it's absolutely relevent in this case. Because this..

So there you have it folks. The BMW 318d - not even preferable over a mostly sound but exceedingly scruffy Ford Granada 2.9i estate. BMW must be so proud to see these things leave their factory wearing the blue and white roundel....

... posted about a FREE car, coming from somebody with your car choice, was all the more amusing :)

Why are people having a go at the OP? his friend was supposed to get a comparable car as replacement, he got an inferior one, I know Britain is the last country on earth where the general populous are deluded enough to still believe that manuals are superior to automatics but still you cant compare his courtesy car to his normal one.

No, I've got so much interest in cars, I am actually interested in far more then just 1 or 2 brands. :)

If you think anyone on the planet is fooled by your denial that it wasn't because a BMW was involved, you would be very very wrong.. :D

Or are you really saying, if we could be bothered to do a search, we couldn't find a raft of equally irrational statements about other cars you've made?

And there is nothing on this planet that has ever made you defend a Zafira, why pretend you are capable of being suddenly mr Objective? :D

I am being a bit tongue in cheek you know.. it's not all about literal insults.. :D

So I choose to drive a Seicento. So what? This means I can't hold an opinion on any car that's 'better' in any way? That's going to limit the number of cars I can talk about on here.

When hurfdurf posted basically the same view in another thread it was, on reflection, not exactly a surprise. He isn't exactly the master of reasoned debate. But I was surprised that you resorted to it, even though I'd 'attacked' BMW.

Becuase this thread was not:

'They promised my friend a comparable car and he got a manual instead of his auto. This really isn't acceptable, XYZ insurer are rubbish!'

it was..

'My friend got a 318d. He decided it was SUPER CRAP LOL and not as good as his 20 year old Ford Granada! he sent it back in digust. BMW SHOULD BE ASHAMED'

If you cant see why what he posted was ridiculous then there is little hope :p

Because it raises certain questions. Questions like 'If a 318d, provided free of charge, is SO bad that its worth posting a thread about how a Ford Granada is better, where does that leave the OP himself?'.

Therefore I beleive it very relevent.

What would not have been relevent, for example, is me bringing up your car if you'd posted a rant thread about Audi drivers, or were complaining about the waste of money behind somebody spending £15k on a 1.4 Focus, or something.

So tired from two days of no sleep to remember editing your post, yet after that same two days of no sleep you decide:

I'll get my phone, start a thread on the overclockers forum. type a bunch of text messages from my "mate" and then clearly try and bate this whole "bmw boys" crap.

nobody is blindly defending BMW, if your post didnt look like it came from a challenged 9 year old i dont think anybody would have commented at all

Thanks =D

You're probably right. As I said, I clearly misjudged my audience. I still don't agree that my own choice of daily driver is as relevant as you make out, but I can agree to disagree with you on that score I guess.

If it was a sensible no hyped thread about the pros and cons of the 318d, etc etc then it would have gone a different way. But it just wasn't phrased like that.

As I said in my first reply - there are bad things about a 318d. I'd have been quite happy to engage in a useful debate about them but really, whats the point when the opening opinion is that its worse than a knackered Ford Granada?

.
So leaving aside the question of "comparable spec" including an automatic gearbox - a small, sporty (well....ish, it was a diesel after all), firm riding repmobile is considered a "comparable" replacement for a big, cosseting, luxury saloon is it?

No it isn't really, at least not the way I look at it. But then you said the insurance company said 'similar' which can mean just about anything they want it to mean, unless they define it ...it's hard to argue with really.

Both cars are similar in that they have engines and wheels, the BMW however is a BMW ...and in the eyes of the insurance company this will be enough to make it similar to the Jag in that they are both considered 'premium' brands (silly as that may sound, when they are at almost opposite ends of their respective brands) ...and the BMW has 4 doors, usable back seats and a half decent boot ...thus will be considered an appropriate stand in for the Jag by the insurance company most likely, since it can perform any task that the Jag can and is still considered a 'premium' saloon car.
