Just recieved my GTX470

I've only got it overclocked by 24% with 6% voltage increase, it's pretty quiet I must say and temps are acceptable although I wouldn't like them to go above 80*C in games - they obviously don't with this fan settings.

Out the box a GTX470 will be a little slower overall, but with overclocking it will be generally faster - sometimes by quite a bit and far more consistant performance. I have no regrets moving from my heavily OC'd GTX260 SLI (faster than 295) to a GTX470 but I wouldn't be in a hurry to do it again. With almost 40% OC on the 470 tho it is quite a bit faster and definitely more consistant performance wise.

Its not a problem at all :D

I had a Gainward Dual PCB and it was so loud even on idle. used MSI Afterburner to create a new fan profile and even at 33% the fan was still clearly audiable (lowest it would go)

As for replacing the GTX295, if you overclock the GTX470 it beats a GTX295 at stock settings!

Stock speeds the score was about 14/15k.

And that is with less heat and noise than the GTX295.

2 In SLi would obliterate a GTX295!

Thank you both for this, lots of reviews I have read said the GTX 470 is slightly slower at stock, overclocked it is better. I just didn't know whether or not one GTX470 was worth it to take the plunge to see significant gains.
I was originally thinking two 470's in SLI would be needed (might still happen though :D )
Thanks ;)

I'm probably not a good example of the real temps, etc. for this card tho - I've adapted the temp sensors on my case to feed into a fan controller to regulate intake and exhaust fans to get as close to optimal airflow as possible, also the airflow is divided into 3 "channels" HDD/GPU, SYS (northbridge) and CPU - so in theory the heat from one section doesn't affect temps in another area until we hit saturation on how much can be transferred to the external environment.

What type case fans are you using.

Ok, I just ran 3dMark at 1GHz core clock (38% overclock) with 1.25V juice (15% over stock voltage) and here's the quick score:

Dunno how stable it is, probably I can (and will) squeeze a little more, mind you temps kept within 75*C but I ran the fan at 60% (4000 rpm) to be on the safe side. Haven't played with clock yet, hopefully it's not my limit or at least I can alter the voltage a little :)

Nvidia must have sorted the drivers from the release ones, as i seem to remember the 5850 was faster in vantage than the 470(Unless my memory is going :D)

I remember reading somewhere that there was allot of variation with Fermi chips, ie some were just naturally allot hotter than others due to differences in leakage etc. so airflow in peoples cases wasn't always the most critical factor but the chips themselves.

krugga are you saying your 470 is at 1000mhz core?!

5850 according to his sig

Could be mine definitely runs a lot cooler than the other 2 I've installed and the ones I played with awhile back.

heres mine for comparison
i had the fan set high at 80% thou

Still wanting a GTX480, this 470 was only to play with until the new gen come out! :D

Nice score though!
I take it that is at stock clocks?

Weird that my CPU gets a *SLIGHTLY* higher score than yours, despite having 200MHz more!

EDIT:: Forgot I had Turbo boost on ;)

See my two benches here:

Managed to get that to 22k overclocked.

One thing I have noticed, is my CPU score increasing dramatically since installing the GTX470..

Any particular reason for this?

I havent overclocked it any more, or even touched the bios settings!

480 @ 870 core. 470 clocks real well and pushes 480 performance.

Vantage by default uses the physx power of the 480/470 to do the physics test instead of the CPU giving a hugely inflated score, go in to the options and disable PPU for a legit score.

Thats the kind of scores I was getting with my GTX295 when it was overclocked.

Its nice for a comparison, not baaad.

You wouldnt do a run through with your 480 at stock would you? :P

One more thing I have noticed, which is very peculiar..

My CPU temps have also dropped..

From 45/46 idle to low 40s/high 30s.

Very weird!

Or is this because the GPU is no longer rudding at 65 degrees idle? :P

A hot GPU can effect CPU temps, good case airflow helps. Just ran the GPU tests only, as you can see the scaling when overlocked is amazing.

I just found out I was running my 5850 in the 8x PCI-E 2.0 slot for the past few months :p

Good to see I can achieve clocks equivalent to a stock 480 though.
