Another spec me thread! (Sorry)

The 2.4 in the S40/V50 is only about 170bhp - it doesnt feel remotely quick. It's competent enough, but dont expect any sort of performance out of it

Yeah I was not really expecting it to be quick, I've realised I'll have to compromise somewhere in my requirements, and after driving the MPS yesterday, I thought after, why do I really need that speed. Most of the driving I do will probably be in traffic so it's pointless.

Avoid the V50 2.4
We have the 140bhp version (fun!) although I've driven a 170 and it's not really very quick.
That, and you'll be seeing mid-low 20s MPG-wise, which isn't very good at all.

Well iaind, I couldn't find a 3.0 Jag local and in good nick, but I found this 2.5 one;

I'm going to look at it tomorrow after work.

I was also pointed to this by my Step Dad when he was looking for lexus's but forgot to put a year limit into auto trader!

He's going to look at that for me while I'm at work tomorrow to get a better look, as running costs wouldn't really factor if I have 7.5k in the bank after buying it!

That looks rather comfortable!

Damn it!

Thats it, I've decided, I hate looking for cars! I've been looking around now at various possible scenarios from cheaper/older more luxurious cars, but due to the age, they are scratched, scuffed, interiors well worn, not looked after etc

People just don't seem to look after their cars :(

I bought my Fiesta ST, when it was just over 15 months old with 2,300 miles on the clock and it was immaculate, and I meticulously looked after it, it left me looking as good as when I bought it, no scuffs, scratches or anything, especially the interior. Yes I know to some its not a special car, but because it was mine, I looked after it. It was near enough 5 years old when I sold it and the chap that got it said it was just like new

Now I'm looking at similar or a year younger cars and they have been scuffed, trim bits scratched to buggery, scuffed alloys etc. It seems I must be a rare person who actually looks after what they buy :(

Thankfully my 10k budget originally set was money I'd saved + the sale of my fiesta. But it looks like I'm going to have to go to as near as new as possible, to find an unmarked car which will mean upping my budget considerably :(

Sorry for the random rant, but i needed to vent!

The reason that sparked this was I went to a honda dealers to look at an 56 plate Accord 2.4i EX with 26k on the clock. The rear door handles looked like they'd been hacked with a axe, scuffs on the dash etc. I sat in a civic too, and I really like the dash, but they were all scuffed and the perspex stuff that covers the dials etc looked liked they were cleaned with wire wool!

I'm having the same issues with looking at cars inside the budget I set myself :(
Luckily time isn't an issue and I expect I'll be searching for another 2mths to find the car I want at the age I want in the condition I want. It's an unpleasant experience but the longer it takes the more you learn about the cars you're looking at so it can only be of benefit for that time when you're finally ready to pull the trigger on a car.

Added to that I've decided I want to move to a nicer, less crime ridden, spot so I'll not only get a decent deal on insurance but there'll be less chance of some worthless scrote deciding my car looks better with a key raked along the paintwork. Only last week a fat lump sat on my bonnet in his jeans, with rivets, leaving a gouge clean through to the metal :(

I think I'd go thermonuclear to say the very least if someone did that to my car and I actually saw it, I'd be trying my very best to do him for criminal damage or something, whatever I could really. Just being a fat thoughtless oaf probably doesn't constitute an offence in Her Majesty's court, although it damn well should!

Thats terrible! Did you approach him about it? this is what saddens me about the lack of morals and respect for others property, let alone their own things!

I'm not in any major rush at the moment, my current job doesn't require my own transport (use a works van) but I went for an interview thursday just gone, which would require a daily commute (nothing major, 20 miles round trip a day) so that would speed up the need for transport should I get the job

You dont need to buy new to buy nice - just be picky.

I know :( I was just having a rant after a fruitless trip out lol

Whats spoiling me is I'm also insured on my Step Dads lexus is250 automatic which he has kindly let me use to get myself out and about to see cars. Its a nice place to sit and very relaxing and quiet to drive, so much so I ended up calling at the lexus dealer he bought his from to see what they had! It would mean upping my budget to around 16-17k to get one of those though!

It's an ongoing issue. The fat lump in question is the friend of my friends cousin who I share the house with. I saw it happen and did blow my top but there's a cctv camera that was pointing my way so I kept my hands by my sides as against round his throat.
I'm getting a couple of other key jobs on my rear arches priced up for a repair so I'm adding the bonnet into that. Then either he or my friends cousin will be paying part of the final bill. It was that or I jumped up and down on the roof of his micra till he got the message.

A few scuffs can be sorted, alloys can be refurbed.
Just because it isn't perfect doesn't mean it can't be.

scuffs to the interiors can be fixed?? I'm not so worried about exterior marks (although they can give an indication as to how its been driven), as they are easier to fix, but stuff like scuffed dashboard plastics that detract from the look etc would be a lot harder to fix?

Scuffed dashboard plastics?! How abused are these cars? Mine is 8 years old now and has not a mark on any of the dashboard!

This is what I mean, I was genuinely shocked at the state of the cars I've been to see, from main dealers and independants alike.

For instance, in the Honda Accord at a main dealer by me, the handle for the door in the rear is basically plastic painted silver and there were about 6 chip marks, some atleast a cm across showing the black plastic underneath.

In the civics, the plastic screen that covers the speedo etc, was covered in hairline scratches, the door handle area (where the electric window controls etc are) are silver coloured had lots of knicks and stuff in. This wasn't just in one, there were 3 civics I looked at.

I put it down to the fact that the cars are not anything "special" just a run around for most people, so probably not cared for by the masses. Although I wouldnt treat any car in that way if it were my own, as that's simply not how I was brought up.

This wasn't unique to what you'd call runarounds, even at the lexus dealer (while not as common as at honda) there were some scuffs and rub marks over the soft dash material (i don't know if you've sat in the 55 reg onwards shape IS)

Catch it with something like a umbrella handle (i'm picking at straws here) maybe they were carrying something from B&Q propped up against the dash etc. Maybe I'm clutching at straws, I'll have to take some pics to show you guys when I go looking next! lol

If you carry passengers and items in your car then parts of the trim will eventually get scuffed.

I've scratched leather wheels a few times with my watch or even nails.
Very annoying, but these things happen.
The door cards were quite scuffed too, but I don't ever remember scraping anything against them. It's all just wear and tear if you actually use your car for more than just driving yourself around.

Well after using my step Dads IS250 as a means of transport to various dealers, I've now got myself an...................IS250 :p

I really enjoyed driving my step Dads around as it was very refined and smooth, so I ended up getting one and here it is;
