Hi all only owned my Macbook for a few months, but i have been shutting it down. After looking on a few links on google a lot of people say not to shut them down.
What do you guys normally do, shut it down or just close the lid???

Theres no point in shutting it down unless its not coming out of sleep in about 24-48 hours. Well thats how iv been operating, sometimes it needs the odd shut down but usually just put it to sleep :)

i never shut mine down i just close the lid, thats whats great about osx is that sleep actually works and doesnt take for ever like windoze

same as everyone else if am using it i just close the lid but if am away for a while and i have my iPad not my mbp then it gets shut down

I will also generally put it in sleep mode the majority of the time as I will usually at least use it the following day. However, as i switch to windows via bootcamp quite often, it will go through reboots quite often.

I always shut mine down (new mbp user) but after this thread I might just close the lid.

Does it not drain the battery in sleep?

It works fine in Windows, it's probably just some crappy driver or service stopping it from sleep/waking properly.

I'd love to know the logic for that advice. There is nothing wrong with shutting the machine down and, to answer the poster above, your battery will run down less quickly if you shut the machine down.

I just shut the lid on my MBP and let it go to sleep. The way I use it the ability to open the lid and get going within a few seconds is highly convenient. There isn't really a right or wrong way.

Pretty sure it was on mac rumours! they said it puts more strain on the motherboard and hdd etc if your shutting down. Also a mac in sleep uses little or next to no battery.

The only time I turn off my Macbook Pro is if I'm off on holiday, apart from that its on all the time, for the last 4 years. Even if i leave it overnight asleep without power the battery only goes down about 5%.

I never shut mine down or even put it to sleep. My MBox2 doesn't like me putting the computer to sleep so it's just easier to leave it on all the time.

I sleep my main Windows machine and my Windows laptop and don't have a problem. In fact, my main Windows machine usually goes to sleep and wakes up faster than my MBP.

As theheyes suggested, it was likely a crappy driver causing your poor experience. powercfg /energy will give you a report on what is keeping Windows awake/causing problems with sleep.

I usually close the lid as opposed to shutdown. It does use some battery power but it isn't much. OS X, by default, will also write the contents of RAM to disk before sleeping anyway so if you did run out of power it should recover. OS X calls it Safe Sleep. Hybrid Sleep is the equivalent on Windows.

Heard this stupid argument before. Yes, your components may be under a little more strain once a day. Woop di doo. Apparantly computer hardware designers are aware that people shutdown computers. Shocking I know.

I was just more curious as what to do. I have been shutting it down whenever i come off it, thing is with mine i can either be on it for 2 mins or 20 at a time so shutting down seems pointless.

Apple's own advice is to shut down the machine if you aren't using it for more than a day. Other than that sleep is the best option for convenience.

I've had my MBP for about 7 months and I started just closing the lid, and I still do some times, but now I generally shut it down because I did notice that leaving it in sleep for ~ 2 days will drain a full battery, obv shorter time if your battery is already running down.

If I know I'm going to want it again in the next hour or so I'll close the lid otherwise I shut it down.
