Bulldozer v Sandy Bridge

Don't know if anyone else has seen this yet, but Anandtech have done a preview of a mid-range Sandy Bridge part. The performance is admirable given its position in the line-up, but we've yet to see the best part - that being its performance in applications with AVX instruction-set support (largely as they don't exist yet). Also its integrated graphics performance is fairly impressive. Unfortunately Sandy Bridge appears to be on a new socket (LGA 1155 )

Looks nice just have to wait now at least new bigger ssds will be available by then so should be able to make a nice new system that will be a lot better than the old systems that are around now.

So intel/amd next gen cpus are now due spring/summer 2011....

Disappointed too hear of the delays but looking at the sneak peeks there looking like there well worth the wait !

Firstly - I too thank you for the link.

However reading in to the results I'm not at all overwhelmed, almost disappointed tbh - anyone else ?

+s power consumption, IGP looks very promising.

-s clock per clock it's not a vast improvement.

Think I'm going to look at what bulldozer has to offer.

suppose less power consumption and less heat output is really the major drawbacks of the current parts, so im not sure what you expected?

Looks pretty good to me, higher performance than the current gen with an IGP that not only kills all current IGPs but also holds its own against current £30 discrete cards. Whats to not like?

Try and remember Intel's market for these chips it is the mainstream, they will pull out all the stops for LGA2011 based parts later next year.

No no - less power consumption is a good thing hence the +ve.

Sorry I should have made my post more legible :o

no i was just saying i understand how you've market lower power consumption with a + since its one of the only things letting the current range down, if they used less power and generated less heat all would be good. so hopefully they've sorted it out with these new ones. :) Bulldozer has me most interested to be honest, its actually a new architecture rather than just a refinement of a current one.

I think we have a common understanding and will not be rushing out to buy sandybridge without taking a look at AMD.

I hope 2011 is the year that AMD turn the tables - I really fancy going back to green side.

yeah same here, had so many good years of AMD computing, felt so dirty switching to the evil intel corporation, didn't have much of an option to be honest. though hopefully with Bulldozer that choice will be given back to us! :D

I always considered an AMD CPU, but Intel give off a better vibe, if you know what i mean. But i wouldn't mind switching to a AMD CPU, would be a nice change, lets just hope the Bulldozer can ram Intel off the edge, and become king of the hill!

Me too if i thought different i would buy a high end am3 board now to get me by but i would be throwing the money away doing that.

:( i really want an upgrade. Hows it gonna be going from Q6600 to a sandybridge, or do i wait for BD or go for a 930 i7?

Don't, I am still on a dual P4 830D based rig and it is doing my head in. The only reason I haven't upgraded is I spent money on home server, media centre pc and lots of gpu's for various DC based projects.
I have run out of patience with my rig and am desperate to upgrade now, and like the idea of BD, but am depressed over another year to wait
Was really hoping for AM3 compatibility, so I could upgrade now, and then drop an 8 core in later, but I doubt that is going to be the case now..

Unless the system you have now is struggling to do anything you want it too i don't think waiting whatever time is a big thing and would be better to wait and know you got the best you could. I know it can always be said something better is round the corner but in this case that really is true and waiting might be a far better use of whatever cash you have then splurging right now on something that come next year is outclassed maybe by quite a bit. I am happy to wait for now although i do think the time it is taking is verging on the daft they have already had years i can only think in amd's case with BD they are waiting for something other then cpu architecture itself.

I'm looking forward to bulldozer. It's probably going to cost me £260 to upgrade the mobo and CPU to high-end AMD parts plus I'll get some £180 back with my current platform. Even if the ram cost won't go back to normal, I won't have to worry about it having a decent dual channel set already and not buying a quad channel ram for 2011 or not being able to oc the 1155. Amd for the win next year I hope.

go for sandy bridge, you'll only see small improvements with BD over SB in anything which doesn't max out all the threads

do you care to mention how exactly you know that Bulldozer will only see 'small improvements' over Sandy Bridge, also worth noting that Bulldozer is supposed to be able to run one thread over two actual cores (correct me if im remembering the wrong thing). i mean if that works you'll be looking at a fairly hefty improvement over Sandy Bridge in applications which don't use many threads. im not making my mind up personally until i see some official numbers from Bulldozer, since all the rumour and speculation are pointless without some numbers. ;)
