Bedford Autodrome Sat 28th August - £199

That M5 sounds lovely! Fairly loud, wonder how he got on with the noise test!

There seemed to be a civic that fell foul of the noise test (we presume anyway, was out for about 2 laps never to be seen again on track)...but then there were some cars that we have no idea how they kept going round, the jet-fighter sounding supra for one!

Which discs are you going for spaz?

I have the Brembo plain 'High Carbons' on my R26, they are much better than the standard drilled ones!

KTEC have some tasty offerings too. It's a shame the brakes are so poor on the Megane's. At least they've sorted them on the 250.

Yeah that's what I currently have on mine, just as good (or bad I suppose!) as the drilled/grooved ones but much much cheaper, £70 for a pair on bremboshop.co.uk.

I think the brakes are pretty good as it goes but very very sensitive if you get them too hot just the once once or twice, they took a real pounding before, during and after the nurburgring on my car, then just one spirited drive a few weeks back and they were screwed :(, plus Bedford yesterday really did finish them off. Will get a picture of the disc later and all the blotches on them.

Ouch. I used to have an R27 Clio, and they were great on that, but the extra size/weight of the Megane doesn't have the same impact!

Which pads are you using? Have you tried DS2500's?

I've always rated DS2500's but its amazing that in the whole scheme of things there are far better pads out there as well. I don't mean just performance, noise levels, dusting and wear on your disc etc.

One thing for sure avoid DS3000, these eat disc in no time, but are very aggressive.

I was gonna get DS2500's on the EVO as I've always been happy with them on other road cars, but did a bit of research and all EVO/Scoob owners who have had DS2500's and then tried something else all say the same thing. The DS2500 is better than stock, but its a bit wooden feeling and can be noisy plus not the best performer.

When you read such things you wonder well surely pads can't be much better again, but I was reading how everyone was raving about Project MU HC+ if you use the car for fast road and a bit of track as been superb pads, not only because of performance but because they are quiet and low dusting. So I went with those and am extremely happy with them.

However if you want a track pad people swear by the carbotech XP10's for track, I've been in an EVO with them on and OH MY GOD, stopping power is simply unreal and internal organ re-arranging.

You got the tyres to stop, now compliment those tyres with some good stoppers. :)

I do have DS2500s on there currently, and generally I think they're a pretty good, rounded pad, the main reason I have them though is that I wanted something better than stock and my friend had a set he never used to got them cheap :p.

As you've said though, brakes are a real black art, a fantastic, normal road pad will probably just start to cry at the thought of fast road driving, let alone a track, and an absolutely stonking track pad will just not work on the road and you'll be into the back of a Vauxhall before you know it, so it's all about trying to get that happy compromise between the two.

The DS2500 is probably on the lower end of the compromise scale, decent on the road and seemingly good on track but start to fall off fairly quickly, feel wise i've got no qualms with them personally.

These Project MU pads sound very interesting though, being a Brembo caliper I'm sure there'll be a pad they make that will fit, will start doing some digging! Where did you buy yours from out of interest?

They don't list your car m8, but best to ring and check because like you say its a set of Brembo calipers and a lot of cars use the same pade just not all get listed.

For example my Mustang used the same pads as the EVO X. :)

spaz please let us know if you can get those pads for the Megane please - I'm keen to try something new!

Never, ever get Carbon Lorraine pads. They are decent stopping power wise, but they release a shocking amount of brake dust, most of which is an absolute pain to remove from your wheels and paintwork!

Got the car set up as I want it now :). First thing I noticed with the new geometry setting was the tendency to understeer now, but you can control it by keeping hard on the accelerator through the corners - so much more rear end grip than before.

The XP10's do give of a lot of dust, but stopping power is epic.

I went with Project MU's as stopping power wise they are not far off but are gentler on the disc and they don't squeal or give off dust. :D

Car looks fantastic Nick. Make the most of that extra cash you spent on a proper alignment, show tony the videos and give him some commentary and get some more front end grip. Will need to sort this ready for the LSD !

Brakes are an interesting one I find that, to a point, you need to find what works for you. All SD2500's did for me was wreck my alloys and discs, wish i had bought the dixcel setup instead.

I saw your thread about tracking the evo gibbo, sounds great fun but very expensive !! The beauty of the 318 is shown yet again !

Are you talking about Tony at WIM? I'm hoping to go down and see him soon to sort my car out.

How much did he charge for the .R, if you don't mind me asking?

Nick's BMW is the one that's had GEO at WIM, aside from the different pads/discs my megane is standard, so couldn't say how much he charged I'm afraid

I'm surprised it understeers, did you ask for that Nick?

I asked for a neutral setup - will show them the photos and see what they reckon. They did said that I would get a lot more rear end grip which I am getting.

It might just be me getting used to the car. If I drive like I used to, the car just understeers. If I get onto the power earlier it brings the car back round again nicely - was throwing it around as I wanted by the end of the day, you really have to use the accelerator to balance it on the limit. It does put the power down a lot better through the corners.

It's good fun, not sure if it's normal though. Will see what they think.

Sounds like you got what you asked for.... That sort of handling is what you want with your 'low power' so your nailing it asap... I guess long term if you go LSD you will end up needing to further raise front end grip so your not in a bad starting point

Russ - unless things have changed tony charges just under 100 for a geometry setup with 3 free adjustments at a later date. Yes this is more than down at your local garage but the fact this is more than an 'in tolerence' setup is why you pay more
