Supermarkets and kids at night

People can make up whatever they wish to justify it, it doesn't matter at all.
Children of that age (4-6) should be firmly into a routine of sleep, probably around 7 - 7.30. That routine can be broken occasionally for parties or family gatherings for example. That routine should not be broken for trips to Tesco.

Dragging 4-6 year olds around the shops at 10pm is indicitative of bad parenting.

Because to do your shopping at the butchers/greengrocers etc would cost 3 times as much and take 5 times as long.

No it doesn't. Waitrose Deliver takes 5 minutes and doesn't cost that much more. To shop instore takes considerably less time than Asda/Tesco as you don't have to queue for hours on end and doesn't cost that much more either.

No it's not, it's indicative of shopping.

Or returning from holiday, or any number of personal situations that do not include poor parenting.

Oh leave it out you lot. This thread sounds like a bunch of elitest grannies harping on about the good old days when shops were closed on weekends and kids were in bed by 6!

A lot of people have to work unusual hours in these times and sometimes they've got to do their shopping at a later hour. Thank **** they're sensible enough to not leave their kids unattended at home or choosing to let their family go hungry while they wait for a more convenient hour. Sure, the little sprites will be ratty and making more noise than usual being up late. But having a moan on the internet because the noise interrupted YOUR shopping trip is a bit rich don't you think?

Again, it depends on the exact circumstances.

If it really is a case of bad parenting though, then the same parents no doubt let their kids stay up to 'whatever o'clock' anyway. Nothing you, or I do is going to change that.

Better off just getting on with your life and using it as a reminder how not to lead your life when you have kids of your own... or if you already have them.

Make up all the phantom excuses you like, food shopping is a non-random planned event. 4-6 year olds should be in bed at 10pm.

Indeed, and you're completely right in that nothing we say or do is going to change anything. But that's never been an excuse to remain silent when the topic is brought up on a discussion forum.

It won't keep me awake at night ;)

Not if it is to buy bread/milk etc on the way home from the airport or ferry terminal.

I rarely plan my grocery shopping trips in advance, it's normally 'lets go shopping' and ten minutes later there we are.

You said places LIKE Tecso and Asda. Waitrose is like Tesco and Asda. Infact, it's got more in common and those 2 examples than anything else.

Most normal people would try to come back from a holiday with very young children at a reasonable hour so they could get them to sleep normally. Some of the people you see with kids late night shopping just don’t have a clue.

7 weeks to prepare, SEVEN seriously the kids will probably end up on JSA with parenting like that.

Garbage, so who looks after the kids at the normal hours the Grandparents, sorry but my grandparents had me all day and night for years and took me shopping in the day, never did I roll up at a Tesco back in the early 90s at 8pm or even the local corner shop, times change but habits died hard.

It didn't annoy me, more concerned me, It was chilly and these parents had the trolleys outside waiting for something to pick them up, just struck me as strange to take kids that late, why cant one parent go, I always remember my mother going and getting the shopping done, why do both parents have to go and bring the kids then shout at them like it was a episode of Jeremy Kyle

Tbh letting your kids watch toy story on a supermarket tv at 10 pm is just ridiculous, while you look at electrical goods but that is life.

I used to hate working till 10 at Tesco, it turns into a bloody playground, and when the kids misbehave they get threatened by the parents that its my responsibility to discipline them. Why the kids aren't knackered at 10pm is the biggest mystery, probably *** parenting.

Why?

Do you know that the children are not prepared for school?

No.

Do you know the circumstances surrounding their reasons for being at a supermarket at 10pm?

No

Are judging people based on assumptions that have no basis in fact?

Yes.

Waitrose is 'like' Tesco and Asda. Did you mean 'such as'? as in the American use of 'like'?

The word 'Downmarket' seems to escape you.

the word 'like' as in similar...e.g Tesco is a Downmarket store like Asda, but unlike the more Upmarket store Waitrose. The relative social status of the clientele being the difference.

One could also argue that there are a lot of petty things that I see or annoy me in everyday life, doesn't mean I have to make a topic about them on OCUK though! ;)

Why parents do not shop on-line I don't know, you can even have groceries delivered on the weekend. Some people are gluttons for punishment I think.

Did online tesco shopping the other day, 5 items were not delivered including a very important slab of beer and some frozen stuff. Notified the driver of the slab because it was obviously missing but didn't notice couple of frozen items were not delivered. Call up tesco to tell them what wasnt delivered and asked for them to be delivered.

Next day the entire shopping list has been re-ordered and delivered. Flat mate signs for the shopping not knowing. Takes tesco 3 days to come and collect the wrongly delivered items! Basically online shopping is just a pain.
