Samsung Galaxy S... highest spec Android phone released... also with QWERTY!

Been using it (rooted + lag fix as well) for the past hour and I find it just as fast and stable as JM6.

Only issue I've come across is native USB tethering is very weird but pdanet works fine. It's pretty cool being able to watch all the flash vids on the bbc site.

They're saying JPC-Firmware 'permanently' changes the Product Code to KOR. Upshot is no more Kies updates unless you can restore the nv_data.bin (registry hacking aside).

Another Question for 02 users i added unlimited internet for £5 extra to my account.
Does this inc the downloading of apps?

the wifi on the phone is dire though the DGN2000 router is pants anyway so that might be a big factor.

I can't imagine it being any different on o2 than it is on Orange, as far as i'm aware, data is data is data. Think about in the same terms as your pc. You wouldn't expect it to cost different amounts to download your email or browse the web.

There are a few services that may be charged differently to your account, but on the whole, all the services use the same 3G modem and therefore link in your phone to access the appropriate servers, so all that happens is it comes out of your data allowance whether its downloading an app or receiving your email.

Also wrt. your WiFi being dire. I see its a Netgear N-300 spec device. Personally I use mine through a DG834N and get excellent throughput, but what I have found is that if you enable the WiFi to use the full 300 (or 270 as it is on mine) then it kills many devices other than Netgear N spec stuff. As far as i'm aware, when you set it to 130mbit it only needs to use one channel to achieve upto 130mbit connections. I found that when set to 270 it needs two channels muxed together, which killed my PS3 if I tried to use it on WiFi, as well as a Macbook my housemate uses, my USB Netgear dongle was always fine though. However when I dropped it to single channel 130, everything has been perfectly stable since.

I haven't changed it from 130 since getting the phone so can't say that's it for sure, but it might be worth giving a go if your router lets you. It is unlikely to really effect throughput and I found my pings were even improved on the Netgear dongle.

yeah that is true! I was just curious about downloading via 3g , H whatever all that stuff is. incase there is a T&C in 02 where large data packets are a no no. been trying to use wifi as much as poss. And checking my 02 bill constantly..lol

meh have nowt to worry about then i guess

Edit - just notied you did an edit..lol

Well it was on 230mbps so changed it too 130mbps/channel 11 ill see how i get on :)

i have a lan(cat5) connection to the laptop (back of house) and the router is right at the front right so the signal has to go through a lot of walls. Been trying to make my laptop an access point but had no luck with connectify. As laptop cant support as an access point.

Sorry about offtopic a bit :P

The phone is good! :D hopefully get my invisible shield today

Just make sure you can get into recovery mode and download mode before you do ANYTHING. Some models of the galaxy s, quite random from we can see, are being shipped with the recovery and the download mode disabled. So if you do anything like flash it or even an official update via kies and it messes up, you have no hope of being able to flash it again to make it work. So yeah just make sure you can get into them, if not, ask for a different one as its an essential part of the phone.

As for your question, im on a rooted JM5 firmware with Samset 1.9f custom rom. http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=665 have a look here for rooting and roms and then here http://www.samfirmware.com/WEBPROTECT-i9000.htm for firmwares (got to create a free account though)

I'm boring and am now back on the official JM1 update from Kies waiting for the 2.2 update. Was running JM5 before this, but wanted to feel "official" again lol

How can you tell if recovery mode is disabled? You cant even do an official update? That seems a bit wrong of samsung.

Naaah you can do an official update via Kies without it, but say if your power went during the middle of an update, or something got corrupted, if your recovery/download mode is disabled then you wont be able to save the phone and will have to send it in for repair which might cost depending on how you've done it (e.g. not official) or past your 1 year manufacturer warrenty. To get into recovery mode, you have to press and hold volume up, home button and power button to boot into recovery mode. this is for flashing update.zip files, restoring factory settings and just rebooting the phone if you get in there by accident. Now the download mode is for flashing firmwares via Odin, and its the only way of saving your phone if you flash something and it goes wrong and you can't boot into your phone. Now thats volume down, home and power. A yellow triangle comes up with a little android guy on sweeping up stuff. It's this mode you need if you want to flash firmwares via Odin.

But look at videos and guides on youtube if you want to get into flashing and stuff :) BUT im not responsible if anything goes wrong of course :P I've semi-bricked my phone by flashing a firmware and it getting corrupted, but they're quite hardy things.

I couldnt get into recovery mode, using the standard methods and had to use adb method, which worked fine.

I find getting into Recovery mode a bit of a pain, so I use Extended Controls Widget, this allows me to add a widget on my home screen that when clicked, asks for confirmation, then reboots the phone into recovery mode ;)

I am the same, can only get in via adb.

Can I get this changed as its a defect? Already had to get1 new phone as the camera didnt work. Not going so well with this phone :(
