Pro Evolution 2011

Going on the videos it looks a much more realistic portrayal of a football match than FIFA currently does. FIFA passing is quite ping-pongy, you can mostly rely on pressing X or Triangle without even looking or aiming and it will go to a team mate, the only way to counter that is to turn off the assists which makes it overly sensitive in terms of using the analogue stick in split second intervals between passes. So it's either let the CPU do it all for you which gets pretty boring, or it's try and live with the assists turned off which is probably the most frustrating thing ever. PES has a better balance in that regards and from what I've seen so far PES has just vastly improved it's passing mechanics and added to it.

I'm not saying that last years PES was better than FIFA 10 because on the whole it wasn't. The majority of FIFA's success lies in the online club and online head to head games. The manager mode has absolutely no depth whatsoever, there are very few, if any decent, engrossing single player modes. We were promised that FIFA 10 would revamp manager mode and it didn't, it made a few slight adjustments that actually made the game worse than it was before.

The only area that I would say FIFA has PES licked is the presentation, and by that I mean the licenses and the commentary. If what I've read is true for the next iteration of FIFA then all we can look forward to is Personality Plus which upon reading into just seems like yet another random aspect which can drastically change the players performance per game for absolutely no reason whatsoever other than to "make it realistic". I'd like to decide whether I play **** or not, not some random element that EA deem necessary. They need to take a look at the NHL series to see how to properly enhance a sports game year after year, because I'm concerned that FIFA is going to slip back into it's mid 2000's add a new gimmick each year type affair.

lol

do you know what personality plus is?

it will fix all the problems you have stated in fifa 10.

basically if in personality plus the person has good passing ability say xavi, the ball will be accurately passed 99% of the time. now say if theo walcott plays the same pass it will only be placed accurately 5% of the time.

its like target practice with a gun, a good shooter will hit near and roundabout the bullseye all the time with very little variance/recoil, a crap shooter, will spray their bullets wildly, this is what personality plus has added, the game will now be a lot more realistic and i think now that they have added this they may remove the morale function, but i wouldnt bet on it.

Tried to get into FIFA10 after people recommendations but after a week or so i gave up on it, just feels way too unrealistic.
I don't mind pes, i still play it now and then, i'll probably get this new one, although 09 was rubbish i actually enjoyed the last pes a lot.

So basically it's what I just said, another attribute which determines how good or bad something is before I've even had any input whatsoever. Do you ever read what people have said?

For what it's worth I'm getting both this year.

But you said you want a game that plays realistically?

I want the game that plays the most realistically, with the best offline modes and a decent, lag free online that I can go into now and again. I'll wait for both demos and then make my mind up, I don't think I'd want to spend £30+ each on two football games.

The Personality+ feature is meant to make the game more realistic..

I don't go on demos anymore after PES2010 demo. I thought it was completely awful but a month later when the full version was released, it was like a different game.

I play both games a lot and I think Fifa's the game where it's easier to score and to score prettier goals which are more rewarding when you look back on them.

PES is the game for me though in the long run because of the master league and the become a legend mode (I know these are both in FIFA but i prefer the PES versions) and just the general gameplay is more appealing to me

No, it doesn't. It adds pre-set dribbling and skill techniques to a player. Not only that, but it adds nothing more to the game than previous editions. But of course, give it a fancy name and list it as a brand new feature and people will cream their pants.

I want a game that is determined by skill, not stats.

Offline is different, but something needs to happen online to stop the crowd of Barca and Real Madrid gays.

Any more details on the BAP mode, especially how they get better? Only thing I really enjoy in FIFA...

ps3ud0

For me it's the fun of having a low stat player in a crappy team and being able to build him up into a very specific type of player of your choice. I mean the usual thing to do is to make sure he is fast as a speeding bullet so you can just run around people but there's other options.

As I got further on and i'm about 7 seasons in, i'm a first teamer for Real Madrid and I set my stats to passing and dribbling more than speed and it's literally a different game to me because there's more teamwork involved.

It only progresses to a certain stage because once you're at a really good club and you're player is better than most, it then changes to most assists and most goals rather then "for the team!"

As long as it plays properly, Mr Blobby could be commentating for all I care. :)

PES has never had great commentary.

I turn it off altogether anyway in this and FIFA.

PES 6 is the best football game ever, not for realism, but for sheer enjoyment alone. The way you can get away with sliding in from behind and not giving away a foul if you timed it right and only tripped the player slightly rather than bring him down required such precision and skill :D

I also remember how if you tried more than 2 one-touch passes the players would would start losing their balance and the pass would reach about half way to its destination, ahh such memories :p

Henry and Adriano were BEASTS in that game, it was ridiculous.

That in depth video looks great, the graphics and the player likenesses really are top quality. Hopefully the commentary won't be complete trash but I expect I'll end up switching it off anyway. FIFA will just be for online club this year unless they manage to fix the offline modes to make them worth playing. This should be good, I can't help but think that the tool which lets you link successive tricks together will become a little overpowered. :)
