right the decision i have to make at the moment is between two cars im debating

07 ish plate ford mondeo (5dr) in the 40 - 70 thousand mile area
roughly around £6000-£6500

07 ish plate vauxhall astra sport hatch (3dr) 15-25 thousand mile area
roughly around £6000-£7000

what do you all think??

Out of those 2, easy choice, Mondeo...

Even 70k is a tiny mileage in my eyes for a car, and a Mondeo is in a higher class than an Astra thus more comfy and likely to be filled with far more luxuries and toys, more space for whatever you want to do with it too.

The sport hatch looks loads better from the outside, However the interior is horrific in comparison.

The 2 cars are quite different, hard to compare :p

thats the plan dandle ive test driven the astra, got a test drive for the other on tuesday. hopefully that will help me decide
astra looks so much nicer from the outside but mondeo is more practical and roomy so...
looks like its gonna be a pros and cons list :D

The Mondeo really should be compared with a Vectra and the Astra with a Focus. I think Ford would tick more boxes for me with each though.

I've not driven an Astra, but I've driven the newer Vectra and Corsa's (albeit, baseline models). A 12 year old Fiesta is nicer to drive

You're comparing two fairly different cars there in terms of size and target audience. Having said that, for me the Mondeo would win every time :).

And yes, I own a Mondeo :).

be more inclined towards the astra. i love the looks, very stylish car in coupe form.

no idea on spec level though.

So the only argument in the favour of the astra is the looks? Excellent, buy a t shirt if you want to look good, not a 7 grand car

Mondeo as Vauxhalls have dodgy electrics.

I've always had Ford and had no engine trouble.

My brothers always had a Vauxhall, and I've lost count the number of times it's getting repaired or the engine management light has come on due to faulty sensors.

This is only one persons experience mind.

of course. Not to mention that any Vauxhall will self destruct on the first corner and the Fiesta is the definition of driving enjoyment.

In what way, I'm finding it hard to accept a 12 year old fiesta is better than a newer vectra. I'd think a vectra has more options, is FAR more comfy, and generally more suited to cruising around than a fiesta. Unless the only thing you cared for is chuckability at corners and driving feel ?

Have you had a look inside? They are nowhere near as nice as outside.

I have been in sport before yes. VXR also but thats irrelevant.

It sure is bland inside, but I really do like the looks on the outside, especially with those factory 5 spoke jobbies. I'm young and this would be more important to me really.

Plus we don't know the spec of the Mondeo do we? could be an LX and they are hardly that much better.

We don't know the spec of the astra either, he's just speculating at the moment. I just don't understand the rationale of choosing the car that is inferior in every possible way because of it's one virtue - the looks. I can't see the logic of placing so much importance in looks that you'd sacrifice everything else
