i have the current setup in my sig and i find that the hd i use is a bit sluggish, when i start up it takes a while to start a program, not sure if there is a problem with the registray or it is the hard drive. i`m thinking of getting a primary hard drive i.e. a ssd or a spinpoint not sure if the performance of the hd is not working as good as it should. i.e. the windows experince shows it at a messle 5.8 compared to the gpu and cpu at almost 8.9

i have figured out the problem, i have a stupid but econimcal hard drive which is rather slow, i .e. wd 2 tb green WD20EARS.

what do you recomend for a performance hd, i`ll be getting a ssd maybe next year, i prefer something like a 2tb but will settle for a 500gb hd

can anyone say what the best one would be under a budget of at least £80-100

get speedfan, see what it says

what am i looking for lol... not the brightest. but i know from my old computer that the system was working. where as this set up i feel that it isn`t working as well.... doubt i have a virus as i rarely use it on the net, but i do have anti virus and anti spyware stuff on it.

well i ran speedfan s.m.a.r.t. bit and it comes up no error after running the tests.
it says that the overall stats are very good. maybe i need a more performance driven hd rather than a economical hd.

What type of Western Digital is it?

Green, blue or black type.

Greens are slow and really for storage only.

Blues are standard speed 7200 drives good for normal use.

Blacks are the faster 7200 drives.

Faster still are raptors.

Faster still are SSD.

You can also run a hard disk benchmark app such as crystalmark ir hddtach and compare with some if the results posted in the forum or hdd reviews.

ahh that would be the problem, i got a crap green.... gonna have to buy another hard drive. and use this green for a back up. the older hd i had in my old computer was a black, thank goodness i thought my system was getting worse.

will explain why a lot of programs aren`t running as well as they do.

will be tempting to get a ssd, but not got the money at the moment.

i have the green 2tb western digital hard drive (WD20EARS) something, running a partition on my main pc at the moment. hopefully won`t bugger it up

Samsung F3 are top of the list at the moment mate.

thanks have ordered

Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (HD103SJ)
Samsung SpinPoint M7 250GB 5400RPM SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM (HM250HI)

and the lapt top one is for my granddaughter... i think she had corrupted her other hd and can`t even get it to format. so saved me a little bit of time and money and got that for her as well as the 1tb for myself.

will probably upgrade to a ssd next year and also get a modular psu as there is a power cable that is annoyingly in the way if i put a ssd in.

Good choice mate, i have 2 of em and they are very nice drives.

well i have never used a spin f3 so it will be a new experience for me. i will have to reinstall win 7 again but will hopefully get a better stablier system that isn't as sluggish.

just wished i lived nearer to ocuk... as they are a great kind of shop, something that is missing from glasgow.

just baught a pair of F3s myself, i love reinstalling windows :P lots of fun. Pretty sure they are among the best price/performance drives avaible at the moment. yum yum

Received my F3 on Friday, spent the afternoon re-installing Windows. I don't notice much difference to my older WD 500GB Blues though. Maybe there's a difference but it's not that noticeable. Probably should go Raid 0 but a little concerned about RAID or drive failure.

yeah i have heard about them, but have never gotten any so hopefully will enjoy using mine when i get it tomorrow. also got a laptop one for granddaughter cause she broke her hd somehow... it is a partition that the system bit {windows part} was corrupted tried reinstalling windows but it kept dissappearing all the time.

well my hd is the slow greens so i will notice a big difference. when i do anything like encoding or other programs the flow of data is sluggish.... i.e. goes fast and then slows down. i noticed it in the gadget i use for monitoring the cpu loads.

Just a thought. The new WD 2TB green drives are the new advanced format and need to be aligned (like SSDs) otherwise you get poor performance (4096 vs 512 byte sectors). There are tools on the WD support website to check/change this (e.g. a free WD version of Acronis). A fresh install of Win7 would be aligned OK but if you cloned a previous system it is probably not. Greens although slower than 7200rpm drives are still pretty fast.

hmmm i heard about that, i tried to go to their website but never got any joy.

not sure if i should mention it, but i previously formated this hard drive in xp, not sure if i did the advance format thing. so not sure if this has anything to do with the problems i have been having

XP will not format with the correct alignment. try using one of the alignment tools under the advanced format link here
