Hi there, im new to Your forum so first of all hello to everyone:)

I have decided to get rid off my laptop and make a custom build. Years ago i used to do it voodoos, AMD 300mhz etc :D So as You can see it has been a while. So while im waiting for the laptop to sell on ebay im wondering if You could spec me a system, basicly for gaming. Price range well that will depend on how much does the laptop sell for but reserve price is £800 so lets set the budget £750-£800. Dont need monitor as it will be pluged into tv. Main objective is to get excellent performance in Microsoft FLight Simulator X but not only, i play Bad Company 2 a lot + Starcraft 2 so i would like to to run smoothly aswell. You can do all You want overclock Xfire, Sli whatever You like. The perfect system would have entry level watercooling + i7 920, but i dont think budget will let me. So i just leave it in Your good hands :)

Thank You :)

hmm i tought i5 is 2 cores and w7 64 is only for quad cores, sorry it has been a while.
also isnt microsoft flight simulator capable of using 4 cores? i tought i have read that somewhere. thanks

The i5 6xx range is dual core but the i5 7xx range is quad core without Hyperthreading.

Win 7 64 will be fine for most of peoples setups including dual core cpu's :)

ok thank you, also would it be worth it to spendextra£££ for hd5850? ty
also im not bothered about external look if u can find a case for £20 but looks like brick thats fine with me

Antec 300 maybe for the case? Its cheaper, not flashy and has great cooling. Only 1 gpu and 1 hdd so cable management isnt really a huge concern.

The money you save from that would get you a decent aftermarket cooler like a titan fenrir (or the evo version for a few quid more) for overclocking.

i7 isn't beyond you if that's what you want. Not water cooled but a decent air cooler will match a H50 if that's what you meant by 'entry level water cooled'...

Intel Core i7 930 2.80GHz (Bloomfield) (Socket LGA1366) - Retail £213.84
Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3 Motherboard £149.99

I don't know enough about FSX and how CPU-heavy it is to know whether i7 is really worth it and the compromise on the GPU to 'only' a 5770 will not matter.

In most games an i5 7xx will pretty much match an i7, so a more balanced spec with that in mind could be...

XFX ATI Radeon HD 5850 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card ***Supplied with Stalker & Stormrise Games*** £195.04
Intel Core i5 760 2.80GHz (Lynnfield) (Socket LGA1156) - Retail £140.99

With the 5850 that would spank the i7 spec in most games, and has your water cooler, but I really dont know enough about FSX's requirements to know which is best.

speaking of spanking, a GTX460 is cheaper and faster than a 5770,

www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-139-OK&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1830

so shove that in the i7 spec above.

Oooh i didn't know the price went down that far! Also dont really know how that slower clocked 768MB version would compare to a 1GB 5770. If it's really faster then go for that for sure. Lol it's more difficult to spec now that Nvidia is finally competitive on price/performance with Ati :)

How about something a little different?

6 core chip, will run @ 3.6-8, decent air cooler in the titan fenrir, 1tb hard drive, gtx 460 768 - great card and beats the 5770 on performance AND price, an extra fan for the front of the case, saves you a fair chunk of change either of the intel system and performs very well ;)

Just change the mobo to atx if you prefer, other than that all set

Interesting. I would just say that somebody pointed out in another thread a lot of reports of problems with that ram which is why I and others are avoiding it in specs. Other than that I'd just question whether the OPs main goal of a killer FSX rig would use those six cores. I dont know if it would. If not you may as well have chosen a quad AMD and saved even more (or allowed for a killer GPU). I think FSX might prefer a powerful Intel, but as i said i dont really know what it likes. I'm sure the OP may be able to shed some light on that if he's a fan.
