Will the Mac end up becoming un-cool?

Or you could just right click the network icon and access it through there?

As I said the UI is just so archaic looking - why no translucent windows, why Finder, why Safari, why is search so poor compared to W7.

As I said, too many ways to do things, what's the point?

Translucent windows? Why do you need that? Why Finder? It's explorer but without the crappy start menu. You don't have to use Safari, I use Chrome on OSX. Oh and I find the search better.

It's just user preference I suppose.

Why would I be kidding - I have both systems and that is my view. Perhaps you are not up to speed with W7?

If you used W7 as you state then you would know just how wrong your previous statement was. I just don't know what it is with most Mac users, whether it's because you feel like a minority but I find the pros and cons of both systems can never be discussed subjectively.

As I said earlier I have a Mac and I love the hardware but for me OS X is very Linux and plain whereas W7 has made a real effort. Given that W7 is now being used in 1 in 10 of the worlds PCs in just twelve months indicates that MS are doing something right.

Fortunately, I only paid £250 for my almost new iMac at a bankrupt sale but I would have been gutted to pay £1250 when I got it home and switched it on -truly.

You are just trolling now.

I have both machines too, W7 crashes to desktop now and then. It IS a bloaty interface, far better than previous versions but my mum still calls me up everytime the internet drops out. Translucent windows? Is that a prerequisit for your operating systems? OSX looks better IMO. Whats wrong with finder??? And as for moaning about spotlight, it was around a lot earlier than vista/w7 search function.

I like windows 7. I like OSX. They both do different things, when I am working I work best on OSX as i'll be using a multiple app environment where expose and all the shortcuts help a lot. When I am playing games or rendering something then my W7 machine is handy as its i7 processor makes short work of it where the mac equivalent is way out of my budget.

Seriously? That's just more than stupid.

While I agree that W7 is a massive improvement, compared to OSX, it's a pile of crap :)

Almost as stupid as your reply...

Be fair, I'm not on either side but that is not the fastest or easiest way to do it on a windows computer .

It was just an example. Just trying to highlight that there are so many things that take ages. Removing programs would be another. Turning off startup services using command prompt + msdiag, so laboured! Dxdiag to see your system spec quickly! These things are so common but spread all over the interface in MS software. Device manager is a pain in the butt. Registry errors are as well. As an out of the box solution OSX does so much more for me than Win 7.

Two gripes with OSX I do have; no native NTFS support and no ability merge folders! That's it I think...

I've been using OSX for the last 3 months or more and still struggle to be anywhere near as productive as I was in Windows. The OSX experience is no more stable in my view, I regularly have applications lock up that require me to forcefully close them. In recent times nearly all the help people require on their Windows machines is because of 3rd party crud that people insist on downloading and installing. Given my experiences that 3rd party apps are often unstable on OSX I'd expect those people to experience similar issues if they moved from Windows to OSX.

I also can't agree that OSX is that intuitive at times, there is a lot of inconsistency. To delete a file you drag it to the trash can but you can't use the delete key. Why is it both work in Mail?

In my mind they are both proficient and do things their own ways. Use which ever you want.

I will agree that Apple make much better hardware than Microsoft ;)

Please don't accuse me of trolling just because you haven't' got a sufficient answer I object to that accusation most strongly. Bloaty UI indicates hungry resources which W7 does not have. Why blame the PC because your mums Internet drops a connection? What's wrong with translucent windows - do you not like nice things, nice car air con etc. if you follow your argument well can you see where you're going. Because OS X cannot do them the argument always appears to be "what's the point" as I say deflection and defensive. Because something was around earlier doesn't mean it can't be improved or god forbid even retired. Have you considered that W7 is just as good in multiple app environments but that you might not be as familiar with the system as you are with OS X hence why you feel more comfortable with one rather than the other? I have been using Windows since 3.1 which is why I probably feel more comfortable with Windows than I do with OS X. However, I have made real efforts to like OS X but try as I might I just don't like it as much and I'm sure that the UI has a lot to do with it.

I'm sure if Apple wanted to make translucent windows then they could... The OS already looks nice and making translucent windows is a bit unnecessary imo (air con is necessary ;) )

I used Windows from 95 - Vista, then switched to OSX solely for a few years as I got sick of reinstalling that sodding OS. Coming back to PC on Win 7, MS have closed the gap, but OSX is what I'm used to, and the same gripes I had with MS still exist. All MS have done is made it prettier and a teency bit more stable imo...

The best way of keeping Macs cool is exclusivity. Problem right now is that anyone can pick up a MacBook for £730 these days.

If the Mac laptop was a MacBook Pro at £2K (with a quad i7, SSDs, Blu-Ray etc) then you wouldn't have all the studenty types buying one "because they're cool" - there'd be less people buying them (because of the price) but those people would be buying them "because they're the best you can buy".

When I bought my MacBook Pro, I couldn't find any other laptop that could match it. CPU Speed, GPU, RAM, Screen-Res, Weight, Battery. Heck even the equivalent Dell (for £200 more) wouldn't match it. http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17755863

I have both a Windows 7 desktop and a core i5 MBP. For power hungry tasks like gaming or 3D modelling I use my windows 7 desktop, for other work (non-intensive) tasks I use my MBP.

I enjoy using OSX more then using Windows 7. I find that it looks better and is more inviting for me to use (Win 7 has a nice UI but OSX really is a beauty).

I think Apple products are perceived as cool because Apple really tries hard to market them that way. Microsoft don't attempt to be cool in anyway really (except with the zune). Microsoft are the way to go for power hungry computing if you are on a budget as the value for money from a Win 7 based desktop compared to a similar top spec mac pro is astonishing really.

As long as Apple keep their prices high, and their hardware design remains as beautiful as it currently is then that exclusivity factor will continue to keep their products in the "cool" category.

I disagree with that 'general acceptance'. In my experience, finder can do everything that Explorer can (except merge folders (grr)), and more... Unless you can prove otherwise?

From memory... copy paste files from one folder to another, delete using the delete key, the address bar is always handy if you have two identically named folders in different places

This thread, as always, has deviated from the op's topic

Fair points, but it's not as if the feature/outcome can't be achieved (drag files to copy, drag to bin and use columns to see which folder you are in).

You've not even tried answer the op's question ;)

I guess any company can mess up. Burberry springs to mind off the top of my head. Once the dahling of the upper class, reduced to nothing in just a few years.

Not their fault thought... They were the victim of knock offs sold to undesirable customers.

Kinda why Apple come down so hard on the hackint0sh crowd, really.

OP: To answer your original question.

I don't think mac will ever be uncool much like BMW or Audi will never be uncool. There will be detractors and the brand will certainly not carry the level of past "coolness" as it becomes more pervasive.

This thread has gone totally off topic.

We've already seen in the OP that when pressed the girl had no idea why the mac was better than the PC, it was better because it was "cooler".

We've got 50 odd posts here debating about stuff the type of mac devotees being discussed just dont care about - the quality of the OS.

The reason macs are cool is because the design is cool. The little apple logo that lights up, the stylish brushed aluminium macbook pros, the glossy white macbooks.

Apple will stay cool as long as the hardware design is right. If the design is right, then they can charge a premium for them which people will be prepared to pay. This makes them stylish, and because they are expensive, somewhat more exclusive than PCs.

For as long as apple's design is right, they will stay cool no matter how many deluded idiots buy them.

Look at louis vitton. Every other woman in the expensive hotels at vegas had a lois vitton bag. Are they about to become uncool ? of course not. High price tags will always ensure a certain exclusivity.

Granted there are some mac devotees such as myself, that appreciate the quality of OSX, and love programmes like ilife 09 and its ease of use. Quite a few on here being a computing forum probably fall into that category. But we're not discussing them

We're on about the 14 year old girl in the apple store asking her parents for a macbook because "its cool"
