New to racing games, spec me some !

Grid is a great game, it's not a driving sim, it feels like Gran Turismo 1 mixed with Need for Speed.

The damage in the game is pretty awesome :D

Maybe, and just saying that reason its not been recommended is because, erm its a bit of a twitchy game... Handling is a little off, its no good as a sim, but not much good as an arcade racer either...

I tried my best with that game, in the end it tested my rage to the max and I gave up with it... Just couldn't find a happy medium and all my races ended up with me fighting the cars around the track, more luck then skill at times..
sounds like you just failed at driving so rage about the game :p

shifts easily one of the best racing games on the pc ever, i wouldnt rank grid anywhere near it tbh, grid doesnt have anywhere near as much content as shift does and the cars felt all horrible and floaty to me aswell.

i thought shifts car handling was pretty good myself however there is a realism mod for shift if you want sim like handling which i believe alters the AI cars aswell so they wont bump into you so much when you overtake them in a corner

Well I received my F430 Steering wheel this morning, excited to get home and set it up, only to find the wheel is broken and on closer inspection looks like a refurbed or returned unit. Finger prints all over the shift paddles (prior to me even touching them), left hand paddle broken (non responsive and no click) and pedals have scuffs all over them.

Every item I have received from OCUK has been spot on but this one, has left me gutted. Will give the chaps a call in the morning, no racing for me tonight ....

Hope you get that one sorted!

For racing sims that are fun focused
rFactor and Live for Speed are most fun sim wise.
Richard Burns is the only real rally game.
GT Legends is fun, but the HistoriX conversion to rFactor is possibly the best fun/cool/serious balance!
GTR2 - Great stuff, feels unique, over exaggerates everything though!

Then for seriousness...
iRacing - good rubbery feel and superb physics, expensive but active online community. Things like tyre temps and air temps don't affect things too much. So as a result the game feels more dead than netKar Pro. But the online racing and quality of general feel is impressive.

NetKar Pro
- Amazing physics. Pretty cheap. Feels real. Temps, clean tires, sticking to the line not to pick-up rubbish etc. etc. are very important as is coping with a changing track. Problem is the bloke who's designing it has only made a handful of cars and tracks. Perfect in form and feel. But not much content. That and races are hard to find. Everything feels alive and mechanical to me. It's very exciting and involving game, although perhaps too hardcore for some?

For me; rFactor with GTL mod. NetKar and iRacing are all I use.

EDIT: also, I hope the mods don't mind me mentioning it, but if it's going back anyway perhaps have a look at the logitech driving force GT/a used g25.

The g25 is ace, but perhaps a little expensive - well worth it IMO, it all feels great!! The only weak point for me is the shifter. It's not realistic at all!! But the wheel feels nice, precise, neat, and it's leather (real/fake no idea, but it feels pretty real). The pedals for me are the best bit. Great weight behind them. The pedals are worth it alone IMO!!!!!

The DFGT is supposed to be good too, but I've only used a heavily modded one in an F1 simulator a while ago, so I can't comment on user experience here!

Unfortunately OCUK couldn't supply me with another wheel, no fault of theirs.

I did manage to bag a G25 on ebay thought for £150 delivered, so I am looking forward to receiving that !

NFS Shift's handling is just all wrong. It's possible to get used to it after a while but the cars just don't steer, they pivot. It's weird.

In preparation for F1 2010 i'd be playing GRID, get used to the engine to some degree.

For me its all about Dirt 2 at the moment, really enjoying that game. Love GRID want to get into Rfactor 2 when it comes out.

All about F1 2010 in at the end of this month... going to be a great few weeks for games with FIFA 11 coming out a week later!!

G25 Arrived today.

I was like a small child at Christmas, until I fired it up and the wheel didn't function. Was seriously disappointed, especially after having to return my F430 also. It seemed the wheel itself wasnt responding to mains power and I could hear parts rattling about inside.

30 minutes and some soldering later, I now have a fully functioning wheel and have removed the casing screws from inside. It seems the previous owned had a go at fixing it himself with little joy.

After sorting out the power issue I found the left hand button on the front of the wheel wasn't working, so some more soldering and that's restored also.

Pretty happy now but still going to hassle the seller for a partial refund.

I know what you mean about Shift but I only tend to notice it if I use the external view of the car, the car just doesn't seem to move around the track properly. In car however, it feels great and is one of my favourite racers. Think it's a pretty good blend of arcade and sim.
