Mike Portnoy Leaves Dream Theater.

Just read this on Blabbermouth, im gutted but i guess the offer from Avenged was too good to pass up, seems kinda crappy that the band wouldnt let him have time off and it came to this.

yep, apparently he asked to have time off from dream theater , all of them, but they didnt agree

I suspect he'll go back in a year or so with DT being 'his' band but will DT have got a kick ass drummer by then and be all butthurt and not take him back? Either way i wish him luck, he's one of my favourite drummers, quality bloke!

Great news :) Hopefully DT will start being a prog band again as apposed to heading in a more metal-specific direction.
Total opposite for me, I love the metal direction they've been taking in recent years. I hope they don't return to cheesy ballads and stupidly over the top prog songs!!! Personally I think they will struggle to find anyone who even comes close to portnoy!!

I almost agree 100% there, however some of their lighter stuff I do still enjoy - Images & Words, Scenes From A Memory, Six Degrees etc.

Definitely think they'll struggle to get someone as good to replace him though.

Images & Words, Awake, Scenes from a memory, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, Octavarium

This news makes me a sad panda.

As above, and their most technical stuff is probably featured on their early albums (before James LaBrie joined) such as when Dream & Day Unite.

DT are my favourite band - Completely shocked about this. I never imagined this scenario would ever happen.

Mike contributed so much that it's really hard to imagine them without him.

The 'silver lining' from this is that I personally would rather they went back to their more progressive sound, so maybe this will spark that change - possibly with Jordan having more musical input. (They're still pretty damn proggy, but there is a clear difference between their newer and older material).

I think Mr Portnoy has been doing a lot of stuff recently with avenged and he also did an album and short tour with Transatlantic so maybe the other members of DT have been sitting around twiddling their thumbs and thinking Mike can't spare the time anymore with all these side projects.

Dream Theater are utterly amazing, it's just a shame they'll always be let down by one of the worst vocalists I've ever heard :(

Have you tried listening to Liquid Tension Experiment?

It's practically Dream Theater but without a singer, and John Myung is replaced with Tony Levin on bass. They do some absolutely stunning songs.

On topic: Quite upset that Mike has left, I've loved listening to Dream Theater since I discovered them quite a few years ago now. They're bound to attract interest from quite a few amazing drummers I would imagine, I'm interested to see who joins.

I'm going to see Avenged Sevenfold on their tour of the UK later this year, so looking forward to seeing them and Mike then. :D

Love Dream Theater. A shame Mike has decided to leave them for other ventures.

I really don't think DT will be the same now, it will be nearly impossible to replace Mike Portnoy.
