because i havent heard your system, right? fine, invite me over then. next time im near Leicester i'll pop in and make an informed evaluation of it. What would happen then? would you listen, or would you find another excuse?
i asked u to back off but u don't , remember this
fine, fine fine. You win, again. I'll stop talking to you. period, and two years from now this same thread will pop up, you'll boast about your 3 car amps and subwoofers and you still wont have listened to a single piece of advice that anybody has given you, safe in the knowledge that you know best and everybody else is wrong. again.
you win.

Hi All,
I've recently had a set of Creative S750 Gigaworks stop working on me.

I can try to get the broken subwoofer repaired but I'm thinking that as they're four years old it might not be worthwhile. I have a couple of options:
1) Buy 7.1 amp and separate subwoofer, re-use Creative speakers ~£450
2) Buy Logitech Z-5500 £200
3) Wait for next model after Z-5500
I'm a bit reluctant to spend a lot of money investing in a separate system as it takes up a lot of space and I'm not sure if it'll be that much better than the Z-5500. I really like the look of the Z-5500 but they have been around for sometime and if Logitech are about to come out with a 7.1 alternative then I'd go for it. I'm not tempted by any of Creative's ~£100 7.1 offerings as I don't think they'll match either the S-750 or Z-5500. There are some rumours going around about a new Z-5500 replacement from Logitech but it doesn't seem to have gathered any momentum, except for the good price of the Z-5500 at the moment.
If anyone has any thoughts or opinions on any of the three options I'd really appreciate it.
Ok, the first thing that springs to mind is that you have set a difficult budget for yourself. ie, £450 is where av amps start getting interesting, but that leaves nothing for the speakers and subwoofer (£200 on a separate sub or dont bother imo, ill explain why in a second). Likewise speakers, if you want real entry-level H/T stuff then £50 a corner is wise (plus whatever you can muster on a centre speaker). thats still £250+
my comments on the options:
1) Buy 7.1 amp and separate subwoofer, re-use Creative speakers ~£450
Not a decent way to go, imo. you would be pretty much splitting your budget between the sub and the amp. the issue with <£200 subwoofers is that by large they are barely better than the stuff you get with integrated systems just like the z5500's. It's only when you start looking at things like the bk gemeni or the xls-200 that you really start to see what subwoofers can do. otherwise dont bother unless you can find a bargain 2nd hand deal.
Likewise the amp - £200 on an av amp will get you naff all. At the very least you would want an amp that can handle audio over hdmi and at this price point i dont think there are any. Which leads on to an important question actually:
if you want to go for an AV amp, would features do you wantt/need? Would you be looking for future expandability? what sort of connectivity (number of hdmi sockets, component inputs ect) ?
2) Buy Logitech Z-5500 £200
Well, ive stated a few times already. They are computer speakers, make no mistake they have some very obvious flaws. However, for £200 all in, truth be told, they are very hard to match unless you are looking second hand and even then i think you would seriously struggle. The downsides are fairly obvious - the least connectivity, no video routing at all ect.
3) Wait for next model after Z-5500
Possibly wise however i dont think anybody knows when/if there will be a successor

At the £450 price point, you will struggle. my money is on the 5500's - dont get too caught up with 7.1 over 5.1 - most of the time people dont have the room space needed for a proper 7.1 setup. IE, the surround speakers are supposed to be to either side of you, and the surround backs (the 6th and 7th channel) are supposed to be BEHIND you at virtually equi-distance to the surrounds but most peoples listening rooms (be it a living room or bedroom or whatever) cant accommodate this because of a lack of space - i sit against the back wall for example; no space for surround backs, so i dont use them
