Currently got an E2160 with 4GB RAM and a 4870 1GB. I can get a Q6600 or a Q8300 at very similar prices, what would be the better chip for performance and overclocking? I understand the Q6600 has 8mb cache compared to the 4mb on the Q8300, but will the die shrink on the Penryn effect performance enough to get the Q8300 over the Q6600? Thanks

The Q6600 has a 9× multiplier, whereas the Q8300 has a 7.5× multiplier. The Q6600 is better for overclocking. As you can get them for the same price, I would buy a Q6600 G0.

Op I don't mean to hijack your thread but I also wanted to ask if a Q9550 or Q9650 will be a better investment than Q6600 as the former two are made on 45nm die. Will the Q9xx series consume less power and produce less heat than Q6600?

On a decent motherboard, a Q6600 G0 can overclock to average 3.6GHz, whereas the Q9550 and Q9650 E0 can overclock to average 3.8-4.0GHz. Also, The Q9550/Q9650 is 45nm, so they indeed run cooler. Also bare in mind that the Q9550/Q9650 have 12MB of cache.

More expensive and not worth it over a 75 quid Q6600

Having owned both a q6600 and a q9550, (3.8ghz on each), id say go for the q6600, it'll be signifigantly cheaper than a q9550, the q9550 will overclock higher, run cooler. But theyre still pretty expensive, ive seen them going lately for £150.00, just over a year ago they were going second hand for £120.00, got that price for mine back then.

[email protected]! That's awesome. Setter did you use watercooling. I am running [email protected] and struggle to get 3.4Ghz stable on aircooling. Also does any one know how much more power Q6600 is likely to consume over E6600 at same speed?

Nope, air cooling, lapped TRUE and cpu with 2 x 2000 rpm fans on the cooler, load temps at 68-68-62-62. Motherboard used was an asus p5q deluxe p45, used the q9550 in the same board, though it was much easier to oc than the q6600.

Unfortunately the Q9550's are a bit out of my price range. Will probably go for the Q6600, FSB wall's aren't really a problem but I think the extra cache is worth it over the die shrink.

Did you try the E6600 at 3.3? Thats what I had mine at with H50-1

I can manage [email protected] fine aswell and it requires 3-4 notches of volts so I just backed down to 3.2GHz. However going from 3.3 to 3.4 seems more problematic as it requires a lot more notches of volts and doesn't stabilise even at 1.49V.
I was told that going from 3.2 to 3.4, i should do it in step.So first stabilise 3.3ghz then from there work my way up.

Q6600 here and still running strong so it gets my vote.

To be honest I think the Q6600 is the best quad in the range for value and performance, unless of course you are lucky enough to have a Q9650 ;)

On ebay it seems there are many Q6600 adverts by one person selling it at £99. Why he doesn't just create one advert and specify how many he has still left:confused:?

Guys what is a reasonable price for a second hand Q6600? It seems currently on ebay the price is around £90+ .

Anywhere from £70 to £85

You would get a good one for that on here if you hit the MM (one for sale at moment)
