Steam - What is it?

The only downside is that you can't resell any game tied to your Steam account, but seeing as I never do that anyway it doesn't bother me

Another plus point is the great sales that appear on steam

Considering how little you get for second hand PC games these days its not really much of an issue anymore.

Hi,

This might be a rather lame question, but what is Steam all about and what are the advantages of using it over just installing a high street purchased copy of the game?

Cheers

One of the great benefits of steam is that it applies game patches automatically, which means you don't have to hunt for new patches yourself. (A rare downside: if a patch introduces problems, you can't downgrade to an earlier version - that is very rare though).

Also, games that have lots of mods are sometimes tricky to get to work with steam. This only occurs with some games and usually the community has a fairly easy fix, but it may not be as straightforward as using a retail version.

In all honesty. Steam is fantastic, however I find you do pay a small premium on games for all of the advantages that Tefal listed above. But they also put on some fantastic offers to save lots £££££££'s !

+1

I absolutely love Steam. Tracks my played time, updates automatically, install games very easily, fantastic holiday deals/steals...

Steam is DRM, people don't think about it that way but that's what it is. Anyway it's nice to have it for reasons already posted above.

Steam is like your wife. Playing away from home might seem like the more attractive option and you'll probably save a fair bit of money if you ditch her before you get too attached. But after you've had some experience with cheating you'll see that sometimes it's worth spending the extra dosh on real quality. So you invest in new ways to make her prettier (like getting a couple of GTX 480s) and discover new ways of playing games (adding new ones to your Steam account). And if you're really lucky you'll find she's willing to let you play with others after all.

Speaking of Steam, I notice New Vegas will use Steamworks. Think I'll give it a miss then. I really wish Bethslop would hand over the Fallout IP and stop screwing it up...

If you dont care about have retail copys or downloading lots then steam is for you
You can sometimes get games quicker but not normaly cheap unless there doing a deal
In fact sometime I can get games i want for 17.99 but steam is selling them for 29.99
But with Steam all your friends can see what ur doing and play plus On some games you get whats called Steam Achievements which are a bit like xbox ones.

Thats funny cause Bethesda didnt make New Vegas it WAS handed off to Obsidian Entertainment who created KOTOR and Neverwinter Nights who where in turn created by the team that left Black Isle Studios when Interplay went **** up who if you are a Fallout fan should already know created the original Fallouts and Baldurs Gate.

So...............try and do a little bit of research before you speak crap.

Obsidian only did KoTOR 2 and Neverwinter Nights 2, they weren't the founders of both games [Bioware was] but you are right anyway, New Vegas belongs to Obsidian.

Although steam reduces cheating in a lot of titles, it technically doesn't apply to some games. For instance, a few of the lesser known titles have ver poor anti cheat systems that make them impossible to play online... No wait, it's just cod mw2
