The memorial would've been an implemented message using a vBulletin feature which would disable the forums and be displayed instead.

Couldn't have put it better myself really. I don't really understand why we have a memorial page for what a lot of people weren't particularly surprised happened. Far worse things e.g. Katrina, the Christmas 2005 tsunami have happened after 9/11, or 11/9 as somebody pointed out.
