I don't have a gym near me that suits my needs so I need to get some gym equipment at home. I have cardio sorted, but not muscle.

I'm not looking to be Mr muscle. But I do want to stay in shape.

I need a bench, dumbbells(all in one, not individual weights), barbell.

And some sort of 'multi-gym'

I did the whole Argos thing and they have what I want - but is it the best for my money? And what brands are the best?

I have give or take £300 to spend on the above equipment, any guidance would be useful.

Thanks.

Adjustable bench, lifting stands, adjustable dbs, door frame chin bar.
Might be struggling for that for under £300 but it won't be far off.

I bought a pair of dbs that you could change in weight from 9kg to 30kg each. From eBay, cost about £90 I think!

Powerhouse fitness have a sale on, should be able to get a good deal on a bench and some stands that could be used for squats.
As always, give them a call and try to get a better deal than online shows for checkout.

I gained 19lbs of lean muscle on my thighs and abs in just four weeks by doing three sets of 20 press ups every day!

You should get a barbell and weights kit, a powe cage, and a flat utility bench.. It will set you back a little bit more for your budget, actually 2x more, but if you can get a 2nd hand one off gumtree (you'll have to be patient anmnd search every few days until someone lists it).

The equipemt these guys are suggesting above is great for upper body, bench press, chinning bar, but you need to work your legs, and ass, which are probably 66% of the muscles in your body.

A basic power cage will also allow you to do bench press safely without a spotter (around 20 people die every year in USA from strangling themselves under the bar doing bench press, so a saftey bar is very helpful).

Also a power cage has chin ups, and you can also put in a sex swing for your missus on the chinning bar.

Here's an example of a home gym, it's not fancy, but it's functional.

I don't know about you, but I thought squat stands were good for squatting and squats work legs?

For double his budget he could have a cheap strength deal from powerhouse which would be more than enough. But his budget isn't double ;)

Oh and what a useless stat that is, 20 people a year in the US? Out of the amount of sets performed I bet 20 people is so insignificant a number that it wouldn't register as .0001% lol

With the budget you've got look for decent second hand stuff (avoid the usual york vinyl stuff that will be knackered after a years decent use). There's a couple of heavy duty adjustable weights benches on ebay at present and then look at getting the adjustable dumbells. Then with what's left see what else is out there. You can still squat with dumbells for now. A power cage is nice, but not essential and i certainly wouldnt want to use one outdoors in the middle of winter! (not when i've got sky telly and a nice heater in the garage with mine! :) )

Heater? I have the fan on in my garage, gets to hot lol.
Sky :(
Think my wife would shoot me' if I put a tv in there also lol

Haha, Sky is mainly for cardio so i can just stick an episode of something on, or the footy etc and then just hop on the cross trainer, though it also comes in handy for MTV. Decided i needed the heater after the last couple of winters, hands nearly freezing to bars weren't funny!

did you visit the link?

the power cage works like a squat stand a more, firstly, for a home gym I imagine you're going to be working out alone, the power cage will have saftey rails which will catch the bar if you go down and can't get back up.

Sure there are ways to escape without the saftey rails, you can lunge forward, and the bar will drop stright down on the floor, however I don't think anyone wants to drop a weight barbell on theirs or their landlords floor.

A power cage does everything, squats, bench press, dips (with dip attachment), and pull ups.. and obviously as mentioned a sex sling if you have the rack indoors.

A squat stand is only good for squats, so it's a bit silly to get one for home use.

Also i had no isses working out in the winter, worked out in the snow last year actually, just need a big warmup, and several layers of underarmour coldgear

It's all about budget, which you seem to be ignoring.
Squat stands are safe if used right and tbh I'd rather the barbell hit the floor than the safetys when squatting in a cage.
At this budget a power cage would leave minimal money for what matters - weights.
In time the op can upgrade to a cage if money allows, in the mean time he can buy equipment that will be worthwhile in budget.

Oh and I know what a power cage is, I'm stood next to one :p

Awsome...must try that. Need an extra 19lbs of muscle on me. Ive obviosly been doing it all wrong for years :D

Would go as Morba says....but you cant get much for £300. For same price you could just about join a local gym for a year?

Ive got a smal home gym....but Id say its cost me arround 2000 quid to put together over time. Its cool though :) Just a petty my shoulders cant take heaps of weight anymore.

You could always do this...

I bought a 2nd hand Olympic bar with 120kg of plates for <£100 on eBay, then bought a bench from http://www.powerhouse-fitness.co.uk/ but if I could go back I would try and pick up a 2nd hand power rack and an adjustable (flat, decline, incline) bench. So you can use the cage to do squats, bench press, military press if you wanted to etc.

eBay is your fried! Have a look mate.

You got a lucky deal chris, an oly bar and 120kg of plates should have sold for a lot more. As always there are some gems to be found on eBay, try and get lucky like chris did :)
